Tilley4 (218), Huron, Tennessee, USA Feb 23, 2008 Kick ass little brew here..... Very hoppy and resiny but still balanced...
Beautiful dark golden, almost reddish pour.... Big fluffy head.... Wonderful lacing throughout...
Pungent aroma of citrusy, piney, spicy hops all the way here.... Very spicy and potent smelling...
Very nice mix of piney and grapefruit hops are balanced by a strong malt backbone throughout lending a nice drinkability to this one. Maybe a tad boozy, but this is still one kick ass little Double IPA.... bubbleflubber (885), Collinsville, Virginia, USA Feb 22, 2008 Pours hazy-amber into the glass, with a nice suds head that diminishes to a nice coating of webbed lace. The nose contains a spice and hop, backed with an undertone of alcohol (almost isopropyl in nature). Flavors are nice and thick, with citrus, grapefruit, light caramel and stiff bitters. The back palate has a lingering bitter finish, and the alcohol comes through in effervescence. The mouthfeel is an oily palate that retains a lively carbonation zest throughout. Kudos to Weyerbacher on the Simcoe exclusivity. It integrates overall very, very nicely. Every contingency is clean and clear, with no "mud" in the complexity. The alcohol teases the tongue with a dry pine residue, and they compliment one another well. The retentive burn isn’t overdone, and allows for a "less-than-anticipated", "less-than-thicker" mouthfeel to work with this brew. Most IIPA’s might "feel" a little bolder, but there’s something to be said for this offering’s cleanliness. BeMerry (37), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Feb 22, 2008 Bottle. Carbonation overflowed bottle on opening. Pours cloudy medium orange with orange-beige head and persistent lacing on surface and glass. Aroma of hops quite evident with pine, citrus and spice tones - very inviting. Starts sour-bitter citrusy, then sweeter undertones kick in. Ends with lingering mild bitter astringency. Reminds of chewing grapefruit pulp. Little alcohol in taste, but effect quite warming. Mouthfeel: carbonation pleasantly froths all surfaces, scattering taste sensations everywhere. Interesting, lively, and well balanced. Better than a good sauvignon blanc. TopherDrinks (96), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Feb 22, 2008 Growler fill. Pours amber with a one finger off-white head. Nose of sweet malts, resinous and grapefruit hops, and subtle hints of pineapple. Taste is pine, grapefruit, and resionus....Simcoe hops! Candied citrus fruit abound, caramel and sweet malts back up the hops, ending with a bitter alcohol finish. Mouth feel is smooth and creamy, but this brew is by no means soft. durhambeer (1187), Durham, USA Feb 21, 2008 Had this a few months ago when it was still warm out... tried it with lunch and it was way too much for me at the time. Tried again tonight and was surprised how much I liked it. NIce resiny, bitter, piney hops, but still some nice fruit. Not the best double IPA I’ve had, but certainly not the worst. Will definitely try again, but not as much as Hopslam or Hercules. I prefer the slightly more citrusy stuff, but this is a nice presentation of the simcoe hops. ksurkin (355), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Feb 21, 2008 Updated: Jan 16, 2009one of the best out there. simcoe hops are simply better, more aromatic, and of course more expensive than all other hop varieties. this beer is a perfect example of the quality of simcoe hops. pours a dark amber with a short foamy head. aroma is huge. hops, pine, grapefruit, pear, i also get some cinnamon. flavor is perfect for you hop-heads. great balance despite the huge hop profile with a sweet/bitter aftertaste. the 9% makes this a big beer meant to savor. let’s hope the hop shortage doesn’t put an end to this brew. masonjer (560), Holt, Michigan, USA Feb 19, 2008 Poured a dark golden color into the glass. I tasted this while also drinking hopslam. so this was up against some harsh competition. This is a big beer, don’t get me wrong. But it paled next to the hopslam.. Still, nice big citrus notes, very drinkable despite it’s big ABV. Ends with a big hop kick. Nicely done, just not overwhelmingly impressive. thehinge (244), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Feb 19, 2008 Not as creamy as some Double IPA’s I’ve had, but a very good effort. Honey colored pour with a good white head...lots of lacing. Citrusy aroma. Fruits and pine on the front end. Lots of hop bitterness in the aftertaste.
