Fast on the heels of our fantasticly reformulated Hops Infusion, our brewers have picked up the gauntlet and brewed a Double IPA using exclusively Simcoe(R) Hops! This west coast Hops was created in 2000 by Select Botanicals, Inc. and carries a fantastic flavor profile abounding with citrusy-grapefruit, piney, resiny notes that pushes this Double IPA over the top. 9.0% ABV in the brew gives it a nice malt foundation as well. Draft and bottles, 12 oz. in PA, 22 oz. out of state (as we have no 6-packs),

¡Buen trabajo! 355ml bottle. ½ Pint glass. Revisited on agt´12. Orangish amber. Chill haze. White, creamy, thick layer crown lasts until last drop. Foam looks rocky as meringue & leaves copious rings too. Citric –orange & strong grapefruit- resiny & piney aromas. Hoppy attack at first sip is rounded by citric & tropical fruit notes, herbal & grassy hues as well. Standing up on line malts provide a firm toasted, kind of caramel flavor & feeling. Medium to full body. Soft carbonation. Oily, dense, texture. Increasing citric & pine counterattack in the middle toward the long sharp bitter finish. Ripe fruit on the aftertaste. Great & flavorful II IPA. Refreshing & delightful with exceptionally well hidden ABV. Good job!!.

Bottle @ The Porter Beer Bar, served in a pint glass. Pours heavily hazy dark orange with thin off-white head. Aroma is tartly sweet medium caramel malt, light hops on the back. Taste is crisp sugary caramel malt, oaky undertones; big dank hops on the back. Earthy, grassy notes dominate there. The malt and hops don’t seem to play particularly well together here. Very interesting, quite different from hop-driven west coast IPAs.

Nice catpiss mango aroma. Taste follows. A lot of debris in this one but that never bothered me. Average

Bottle from ABC. Pours a gorgeous dark murky brown with a thin head that is gone almost instantly. Lacing is expectedly thin as well. Aroma is super piney with a malt skeleton. Some dark fruits here as well. Flavor is bitter throughout with a long, satisfying finish. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel. Each sip is a glorious jolt of flavor and a reminder of why I love this style. I?ve had better double IPAs. Not really getting any nose on this one, but does have the big "stank" finish that one is looking for. Think I?ll pass next time on this one. Bring more aroma next time.

Pours rusty orange with nice one finger head. Aroma of citrus, pine, tropical fruits, pine, dank hops, and herbal hop with some light sweet and bready malts. Has a medium- full body with a creamy mouthfeel. Overall, a tasty DIPA.

Bottle into snifter glass, hazy rusty-amber color with cream colored head. Aroma of strong pine/grapefruit hops, heavy malt sweetness, light fruitiness and faint woody note. Taste adds notes of caramel, berries, lemon rind, dried fruit (prunes mainly) and honey. Heavy body, low carbonation, sticky, syrupy, dry with lingering citrus bitter finish. A monster yet balanced DIPA, showcases the complexity of the simcoe hop well.

Deep amber, some brown, moderate haze, light tan head medium retention. Aroma of woods and red berries, some sweetness. Flavor starts with a cherry like essence, moves into some sweetness with resin, fades in a long slow finish with strong woody bitterness. Quite nice.

I’ll be honest here, its too much. I don’t know if my taste buds have turned but I feel this is just a full-on-in-your-face-malty-hoppy-behemoth that lacks that refined taste. I prefer light body ipa’s so I may be biased, but the malt sweetness is too much. Apricot juice, thats its.
