COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Eleven is made with a single variety of hops, Phoenix, from the UK. Phoenix was developed at Wye College to be a high alpha acid (bitterness) hops with a British flavor profile. Phoenix is also low in cohumulone and high in aromatic oils, so you can throw a ton of ’em in and the beer will stay smooth and aromatic. This beer has 109 IBUs in it! The taste profile is incredibly balanced and dangerously drinkable for an 11.7% brew. But don’t look for that grapefruity-piny taste you get from US hops (not that there’s anything wrong with that), these buds are fruity and earthy with an almost berry-like aroma, to give this beer a unique taste among big IPAs. Bitterness we got! And malt to back it up, with the result being a very intriguing beer you’ll just want to sip all night thanks to Phoenix hops. Cheers!

Bottle, while sitting at the bar at D’s in Regent Square just outside of downtown Pittsburgh. Pours a dark orange with a clotted creamy thick head that settles in a few minutes. Nose is more like barleywine that’s hopped up and I really believe that this should be considered a barleywine more than a 2IPA. The hop is unbelievable in that there is only one in this beer as it is spicy and flavorful, then a smooth slide into a great closing bitterness. I’m not sure that I’ve had the Phoenix hop before, but I am impressed with it. I actually still smelled and tasted some citrus in this, but definitely lots of malt and flavor - hard to describe the flavors as the sweetness was evident and the viscosity was very big... smooth, but sticky and probably too much body (syrup like, not velvety). This was good though, and well worth a try.

Bottle. It pours an orangey dark golden body and almost no head. The aroma still has a good hoppyness, altough faded. Pine cones and resins and a good dash of orange zest. Maltyness too. It’s quite bitter in the mouth, with malty sweetness trying to balance it. Pine cones, orange and some phenolic notes. Lasting bitter finish with a nice sugary maltyness. Even though it’s more than six years old, it’s a nice DIPA. 130216

Bottle @ fonefan tasting. Nice head with good duration. Color is amber. Aroma and taste unfortunately are oxidated and hardly any hops left in the nose. Finish is long and bitter though with some alcohol as well.

Had this for a long time. Very hazy amber, thinner head but leaves some lacing. Bigger malty nose but not overpowering, hints of citrus and some pine. Flavor is prompt and potent. Hop bite from the get-go, obvious malt profile and green hop flavor. Big and large, not the most clean and distinct tasting. I guess the cloudy appearance is somewhat representative of the over all flavor. Perhaps this could have come across a bit better had I handled it better over the last few years.
