bigrond (1043), factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 24, 2008 this was the best beer at the beerfest. Strong aroma, black as night. With a real ’whiskey punch’ at the finish. enjoyed it a lot. badlizard (2326), Berkeley, California, USA Feb 21, 2008 vintagecellar Black with a tan head. Chocolate and mild whiskey aroma and taste with a dry finish. Decent. Frauditor (148), Hagerstown, Maryland, USA Feb 19, 2008 bottle. pours dark, almost black with little dark brown hints around the edges. little foam settled out to nothing. smells is raspy and prickley. can definitely taste the barrel in this. the vanilla does a good job of keeping the alcohol taste in check but there is still a feeling of time slipping away as you sip this. Beerlando (2286), Orlando, Florida, USA Feb 15, 2008 The pours yields a really dark, opaque black body. A bubbly, foamy, tan colored head settles to a thin, asymmetrical blanket. Random, sudsy flares of lacing cling to the glass. The aroma is deeply malty and fruity, with huge notes of bourbon soaked raisons and figs lying atop layers of velvety caramel and dark chocolate. Oak, vanilla, and anise are all present as well, adding smoothness and depth to the fumy bourbon nose. The flavor is rich and chocolaty, with a good dose of bourbon character. The big malt profile makes this one pretty sweet, with stewed raisons playing a big role. The vanilla really intensifies on the swallow, making for a sweet, relatively light finish. The only major drawback of this beer is its less than substantial mouthfeel. The body is on the thin side for an Imperial Stout, and it feels quite wimpy for the style. I’m a sucker for bourbon barrel aged beers, but this one just isn’t that great. joekfsu (138), Boardman, Ohio, USA Feb 6, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours nearly pitch black with a tall tan head that is mostly lasting. Aroma of bitter chocolate and coffee. Initial taste of malts, dark fruits, and a hint of smoke. Flavor ends kind of dry, fruity, and bitter with a hint of alcohol. Limited lacing, light carbonation, medium to heavy body, some alcohol noted. Drinkable, but other options out there. Ughsmash (3983), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Feb 5, 2008 Bomber, 2004 or 2005. Poured a healthy shade of clear deep brown with a short cap of deep yellowy-brown head that settles to a mottled dusting. The aroma is rather powerful, and highlights the barrel aging well.. sweet vanilla meets oak and bourbon sourness upfront.. well-roasted dark chocolate and molasses flow smoothly behind.. despite the big components, this remained pleasantly mellow. The flavor was rooted with well-roasted dark chocolate and the molasses shows leaves a sticky remider at the sides.. vanilla sweetness, bourbon, and sour, grainy oak also find the edges.. sour finish with bourbon and chocolate. Very dry on the palate, with almost refreshing sourness around the edges (just a bit too much oak at times).. medium-plus bodied and creamy across the middle. Nice one! RblWthACoz (963), Brooklyn, New York, USA Feb 3, 2008 Pours a pitch black with a higher rising tan head that falls fairly quickly. Nose is thick molasses malts with mild coffee on there. The malts are the thickest character here though. Flavor is malty and thick. I get a touch of alcohol as well. Feel is about standard for the liquid, though it seems to fall off on the end to a more watery and thin feel. Carbonation is typical. Overall this is a good brew in the essence that it is even and smooth. There isn’t anything overly interesting going on here. Just an even keeled experience. PhillyHomeBrew (176), Forest Hills, New York, USA Feb 3, 2008 Nice dark body topped off with a small off-white head. The aroma has quite a bit of coffee, but there is also much of the caramel, vanilla, and bourbon aromas that you would expect. There is a ton of coffee on the palate with vanilla and caramel. Tastes like an Irish coffee with bailey’s.
