Maria (6056), Thisted, Denmark May 6, 2007 Thank you Coldbrewky/Steve for this nice beer, that I have looked forward to tasting. it’s pitch black, and the head is nougat, huge and creamy. The aroma has clear notes of oak barrels and vanilla. The mouthfeel is oily and smooth. The flavour is powerful and yet very smooth. It has a lot of oak, vanilla, roasted malt, chocolate and some whisky. Normally I don’t like the whisky flavour, but here it’s a perfect match - and it’s a really nice stout! 2064 hezron (600), Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA May 5, 2007 This bottle was traded to me by either zathrus13 or slob, I can’t remember. Thanks to whichever one of you sent this to me back in 2005. Buttery oak and creamy chocolate in the aroma. Believe it or not, this actually smells creamy. Oak is fairly strong, it is interesting. Darkest black in color with a 1/2inch tall, tan head that fades. Sweet vinous fruitiness that quickly changes to a roasted malt and then oak filled finish. Wow, that is a lot of oak. The body is a little thin, almost watery. The more I drank of this, the lower the flavor score went, due to the overwhelming oak. This was not oxidized after two years, but the oak flavor sure didn’t fade. MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA May 3, 2007 A gift from Dennis Bell. Bottled. Beautiful black pour with thin tan head. Nice full body with a good chocolate malt and coffee aroma. A strong roasted flavor with a bitter dry finish. A pretty good brew. BleacherBum (176), Blowing Rock, North Carolina, USA May 3, 2007 Updated: May 5, 2007Aroma is of vanilla, wood and alcohol. Flavor is of some bourbon, oak, coffee, a little chocolate, vanilla creaminess and alcohol. Like the Blasphemy, Weyerbacher has overdone it with the barrel aging. This isn’t as hot as Blasphemy, but is still a little overbearing. This isn’t terribly complex, or even overbearingly one-dimensional in a good way. A little disappointing for an Impy. MaxxDaddy (261), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA May 2, 2007 Updated: Jul 7, 200722 oz. bottle sampled next to Old Heathen. Poured black with a tiny ring of tan bubbles on top. Aroma of vanilla, bourbon, wood. Sadly, that was it...it was all barrel and no stout. After about 15-20 minutes sitting in the snifter, I could faintly smell some roasted malts. The taste was more of the same. Lots of bourbon and vanilla, but again, where’s the stout? Once again, later on I was able to tease out some impy tastes in there, particularly in the finish. Had a moderate body and not much carbonation. It seemed this beer was completely overwhelmed by the barrel, and ended up being one-dimensional. I think I enjoyed the Old Heathen slightly more than this, but that’s not saying much. I could see this being quite a bit better if the barrel was less evident. holdenn (1431), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 25, 2007 12 oz bottle thanks to my SS. Sampled this next to Old Heathen. Pours black with a tan ring of a head. Raisins, chocolate, dark fruit, prunes, vanilla, and bourbon in the nose. Wow a lot more complex then its little brother. Light body with chocolate, raisins, prunes, and dark fruit. Pretty decent beer and definitely a step up from Old Heathen, but I’m still not too impressed with Weyerbacher. drewbeerme (2224), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 19, 2007 12 oz bottle, thanks to holdenn for this sample, providing it next to old heathen was also a treat. pours dark with small tan head. nose was of bourbon, vanilla, currants, and plums. flavor was of watery bourbon, very faint and weak impression, plums and currants. the flavor lacks richness, depth and complexity. abv was well hidden. body too thin. i liked this better than old heathen but you can really tell it’s the same mediocre impy just put in a barrel, mand well all know that won’t make a great beer. bgburdman9 (822), Columbus, Ohio, USA Apr 18, 2007 Pours pretty dark with a pretty good sized white head. Aroma of chocolate, maltiness, alcohol, and some oak and bourbon. The bourbon is pretty light. Aroma is pretty rich and malty to start but the alcohol came out a lot more as it warmed. I got metallic notes every so often in this that kind of threw me off. Just an average barrel aged imp stout.
