mike mcneil (660), St Augustine, Florida, USA Aug 8, 2006 Pours a viscous opaque black. Some faint ruby-red highlights when held up to light. Produces a 1 inch thick, dense tan head which is lasting, leaving some spotty lacing as the glass drains. Rich, upfront aromas of mostly roasted malts, dark chocolate and charred wood along with some mellow notes of vanilla and bourbon. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy but not as full and chewy as many other RIS’s I’ve tried. Pleasant flavors of sweet roasted malts, espresso, dark chocolate are noted but somewhat restrained. Not as assertive as the aroma suggest. Some flavors of bourbon, molasses and vanilla bean also sneak through. Finish starts sweet then transforms to a mild woody bitterness. Well done and very drinkable but not as big as many others of its style. TPaliga (212), Munster, Indiana, USA Aug 3, 2006 I like this a bit more than the Old Heathen. The oaky notes took away a bit of the dryness and added a bit the overall flavor. Pours black with thin rim or red and a nice creamy head. Aroma is oak, sweet roasty malt, molasses, chocolate, and a hint of vanilla. Taste is the same. Finish is sweet and slightly smoky. Palate is a bit thin. Phatz (225), Paradise, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 1, 2006 Weyerbacher has the coolest (well maybe=) labels. The bomber presentation is simply cool. The important thing is the beer inside. I LOVE this beer. It is certainly my favorite Weyerbacher beer.
Appearance: Dark black body worth mahogany around the edges. Nice head with great retention.
Smell: Beautiful dark roasty malt, currants chocolate, with a hint of smokiness. Very enticing.
Taste: This beer is so thick and creamy and yet not the biggest Russian Imperial that I’ve had it maybe the most drinkable RIS. The roasty flavor leads into a chocolaty malt with hints of oak and vanilla. I love the hint of bourbon flavor and the espresso in the finish.
Mouthfeel: The body could have been bigger, but on the other hand that may reduce it’s drinkability a bit. The medium body is remarkable smooth and creamy.
Drinkability: Dangerous. I love the flavor so much I could put down the whole bomber twice over and regret it =) Fortunately, I was sharing with friends.
Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!
Ty5592 (1015), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 28, 2006 Updated: Aug 28, 2006Very good stout. Pitch black with hardly any head. Sweeter than their regular stout, with hints of vanilla and wood flavor. This beer is mighty tasty. adrian910ss (1395), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 28, 2006 2004 bomber. Pours a malty black color with a nice thick brownish beige head. Aroma is of rich oak aged bourbon barrels, whiskey, vanilla coffee beans and a hint of coconut. Flavor is dominated by the oak barrel bourbon. Hints of vanilla, whiskey and dark chocolate dominate the palate. Much better than the Old Heathen. Excellent overall. KingpinIPA (842), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jul 26, 2006 Dark, midnight color. Smell of Caramel, alcohol, chocolate, hops, malt, bourbon and alcohol. I know I said it twice but its very high for me. Taste of chocolate, bourbon, hops, caramel and a wonderful sweet/ woody bitterness at the end. brewblackhole (1367), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Jul 24, 2006 Thanks Kingpin for sharing this one. The aroma of alcohol dominated the aroma ,so strong it reminded me of the whiff I got of SA’s Utopia, more of a scotch wiskey than a bourbon, once that wave passed you could detect the vanilla, and coffee, taste again high scotch whiskey, followed by the sweet vanilla coffee malt tastes. Tastes much more potent then 8.2,I would try it again anytime
cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA Jul 19, 2006 22 oz. bottle via trade with jasonmech77 - Pours black with a good size tan head that slowly fades. Nice lacing. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. Flavor is much the same with enough hop bitterness to give it a little zing. A very smooth full bodied beer. An excellent beer. Thanks Jason.
