Black colour with a medium brown head. Roasted, chocolate, vanilla, coconut, wood, coffee aroma and a wood, chocolate, coffee, vanilla taste. Medium body with a long vanilla, wood finish. Jokes (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 22, 2005 Dark red with a huge, deep brown head. Lots of vanilla, some coconut, sharp whiskey, light caramel, cocoa, oak and perhaps a touch of coffee. Slightly add fruity aroma pop in, seemingly ester based. Sweet apples and sugar-coated raisins. Smooth, soft body but lacks a little of the depth and character necessary to be truly elite. The flavor really shows the character of the oak aging. The obvious whiskey character dominates the cocoa, caramel and coffee notes of the base stout. Some more roasted character pops out toward the end and into the finish. The finish is quite nice, as the whiskey character subsides, allows more base stout to come out and completes the task without burning alcohol. Perhaps the strongest characteristic of the Heathen is its subtlety and smoothness at a somewhat relatively low gravity. However, most of the time, the bourbon character takes over and dominates the more balanced base with whiskey and vanilla. Not terrible, but definitely not my favorite from Weyerbacher. Perhaps a little less time in the barrel, at least for my tastes. Thanks Steve! ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Nov 21, 2005 Dark brown colour with a light brown head. Roasted malty aroma with lots of sweet dark chocolate and a faint coffee bitterness. Sweet chocolate flavor, faint notes of oak. joergen (8430), Frederiksberg, Denmark Nov 19, 2005 Updated: Oct 8, 2006Bottle.
Black coloured with a beige head.
Roasted aroma of vanilla, chocolate and coffee.
Roasted flavour of vanilla, coffee abd chocolate. MullMan (1080), Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA Nov 14, 2005 black body, thick frothy light umber head. aroma is dark chocolate cookies, vanilla, and roasted malt. flavor is roasted malt and a little dry, but balanced with chocolatey sweetness and a little whiskey. some sweet licorice and smoky, oaky acidity in the finish. seems like there’s a high std dev for this one by the rating descriptions, but I liked it! puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Nov 13, 2005 Much better than Old Heathen, IMO. Had on tap in Ithaca. The roastiness, coffee, smokiness in the aroma came through intensely, the body thickened, and the beer had a very pronounced bourbon flavor that absolutely cannot be missed. A much nicer stout than its little brother, though still can’t compete with the big boys. 9er (29), Delaware, USA Nov 12, 2005 Mild fruity aroma. Mild sweetness mid to high carbonation. Alcohol dominates. Bourbon-like aftertaste and chocolate appears at the back of the pallete. Makes this a less appealing beer than was hyped. Mid range stout with an average flavor.
