altkencru (143), USA Nov 4, 2005 I’m a big fan of WBs main line of beers, but frankly these specialty beers are all too convoluted. Too much going on, so much so that nothing happens except high alcohol content. OKBeer (1159), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Nov 3, 2005 22 oz. bottle courtesy Jerc and Probiere. Pitch black colour with a thin frothy and creamy tan coloured head. Rich chocolate and coffee notes under a woody, alcohol, and bourbon aroma. Vinous, roasty, acidic, woody, citrus, and light coffee flavours with an alcohol and citrusy bitter finish. Medium bodied, creamy and smooth mouthfeel with a light finishing burn. Lighter bodied than expected but nice. kms399 (267), plymouth, Minnesota, USA Nov 3, 2005 Updated: Nov 24, 2005thanks to kramer17801for this one. pours pitch black with decent fluffy brown head which recedes rather quickly leaving no lacing. aroma is fairly strong-- oak, coffee, chocolate, molasses, kind of a sweet vanilla mixed in, taste is bitter oak, molasses, there is a light after taste of whiskey, and it almost seems like there is a subtle dark fruit hidden in there somewhere. the alcohol is very well hidden in taste but i can feel a slight warming in the end. this is a really good beer DCJack (146), Alabama, USA Oct 29, 2005
This beer is OK to drink, but it is fairly weak, a kind of two-dimensional brew.
Has none of the depth or complexity of other stouts, kind of like a stout made from a packaged mix.
The aftertaste is smokey and lingers like the smell of cigarettes on your clothes the morning after a night at the pub.
~ erway (1002), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA Oct 27, 2005 Black with an overly loose brown head (some red hue to it). The aroma is very cabernet-like with tons of oak, light chocolate and moderate acidity. The body is med, med-light with a lot of CO2. The flavors are overly acidic while they also lose the typical RIS roast and chocolate flavors and don’t really retain the winey character of the nose. The finish is moderately bitter and unavetful. This unlike many BA RIS goes a little to far with the oakiness. Not really my cup of tea. The bretta has gotten away with the beers chewy body and left it sour and somewhat handicapped. PeterLikesBeer (104), Berwyn Heights, Maryland, USA Oct 25, 2005 Pours black with a small tan head. Arom is sweet and woody. Flavor is bitter at first but ends pretty sweet. There are notes of chocolate but the main flavor is coffee. You can taste a little bit of oak in the finish. Pretty good beer. ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Oct 25, 2005 Updated: Dec 5, 2005Pours jet black with a big, thick tan head, receding to a nice cover. Oak is very present in the nose, notes of coffee and chocolate. Flavor is dark chocolate and coffee, oak flavor is nice and mellow, finish is dry and bitter. Texture is a bit on the thin side. I think the oak aging definately adds something to this beer. Unfortunately I don’t think this is a very good imperial stout to begin with. heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Oct 21, 2005 The body is black as any I have seen. The head is a light orange and brown color. The aroma is obviously bourbon with vanilla, oranges and dry leaves. There is also chocolate and subtle cinnamon. The taste is woody with vanilla and some ligth chocolate. There is also some coffee. A decent impy stout, but nothing to impress. As Kevin said, this is a little boring. Thanks for sharing the bottle, hey kevin.
