Commercial Description:
This is an incredibly intriguing ale is made by aging our Old Heathen Imperial Stout in oak barrels that were used for making fine Kentucky bourbon! The result is an extraordinary, dark, and mysterious stout whose very essence has been enhanced. The aroma is filled with vanilla, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans. This silky-smooth brew has notes of oak, whiskey, roasted barley and vanilla that meld together on the tongue to create an incredible sensation. Heresy is released in February.

Appearance: Pours an inky black body with a dark, tan-colored head that quickly fell to a thin ring of lace. Smell: A redolent aroma vast in red wine qualities; dark chocolate, black pepper, alcohol, and tart, dark fruitiness. Taste: For me, it’s more evocative of a red wine than anything bourbon based. Unfortunately, any chocolaty or roasty stout qualities are thin and tend to meander, and that’s if you can perceive them beneath the excessive oakiness. As the beer warms, the alcohol goes from being glaring to overkill. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Moderate carbonation. Somewhat watery texture. Drinkability: For me, it fell short of the bold, though balanced deliciousness of some other Imperial Stouts. In fact, I preferred the simple, straight-up Old Heathen Stout.

Bottle, thanks Hogtown Harry. Black pour, small tan head. Sour porter like aroma. Sourness carries over to the taste, which again I found very porter like. Taste is quite flavourful but way too acidic - this is supposed to be an imperial stout? I’m 0/2 from this brewery, this one just didn’t do it for me either.

Bottle: Courtesy of Styles. Lots of vanilla in the aroma with bourbon and some light chocolate and very light roasted coffee that struggels to get by the vanilla. Pours a dark brown, virtually black with a small tan ring for a head. Just like the aroma, flavor has a lot of vanilla and some bourbon. Light chocolate and light roastiness. Not a whole lot of coffee. A touch of sourness in the finish. Does not come across like an Imperial.

Bomber from axilla. The brew pours to a dark black body with a bubbly gorgeous tan head. Nice spotty lacing. The aroma is hugely lactose. There’s also a woody coffee and a light bourbon. The flavor has lactose, roasted chocolate, rhubarb, and oak. The palate is really creamy with lactose and is very coating. Nice rich mouthfeel.

Sweet mellow smoky aroma. Oak and vanilla, alcohol, banana, huge esters and phenolics. Chocolate milk and malty sweetness. Very light bitterness. Dark black oily with thin tan head. Heavy oily body, with medium carbonation. Starts with big malt, syrupy and rich. Limited sweetness, but dark chocolate and coffee. Oak and vanilla, estery. Roasted grain, and bittersweet coffee. Finish is medium bitter with tangy oaken notes. Dry nutty bitter after.

Thanks to cbkschubert for this 12 oz. bottle. Good sweet chocolate aroma. Black body with tan head and some good lacing. Sweet alcohol and chocolate flavor. Also had a fruit presence in the flavor as well, Left the palate with an aftertaste like you just had a Hersey’s chocolate bar.

Smells like buttered popcorn. Very attractive beer - dark black with a tall tan head. Sweet chocolate taste with whiskey undertones. Heady body - think like oil. Couldn’t get over the buttered popcorn smells and tastes, so not rating so high...

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, blankboy, tupalev & jerc - courtesy of HogTownHarry. Deep ruby-brown with a small tan head. Aroma is tart & fruity off the top, with roast and chocolate in the background. Medium mouthfeel. Flavour starts roasty, with big notes of vanilla and berries in the middle, and turns roasty again in the finish, with some moderately sour coffee notes. Really interesting.
