Opaque black with a light tan head. Licorice, bourbon, smoked malts, with some chocolates. The bourbon may have been slightly overdone in this one, but it was still yummy. willblake (2194), Belcamp, Maryland, USA

Sample came from a bottle filled off a tap at Which Brew in PA. First off, this beer looked slick and rich as black motor oil with silly lacing. Aromas of whiskey and roasted nuts engulf my head, I’m in awe before I even sip the stuff. Carbonation is a non issue as this is a third hand sample, but some activity could be encouraged with a vigorous swirling of the glass. First sip is full of burbon, deep vinous fruits, molasses, and brown sugar in the front. Ridiculously long across the middle, roasty and nutty. The whiskey and oak persist from front to back and linger in the sinuses, mingling with a pleasant alcohol burn. A truly outstanding beer, one that I must track down and purchase a case of. | 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 1/5 | 10/20 | Jul 8, 2007 Bottle. Boozy aroma has oaky, bourbonous notes. Lightly fruity with vanilla and faint chocolate malt balls. Motor oil pour, very nearly opaque with a fizzy tanned / light brown head. Hot, hot body, whew, with some fumes. Taste is dark roast with oak and vanilla, slight chocolate more toward the aftertaste and a thin body with a somewhat caustic feel. Throat too warm. Unbalanced mess. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 15, 2004 Mostly opaque black body with a burgundy hue and a large, persistent, velvety tan head. Rich chocolatey nose plus bourbon and port notes. Aroma is also of cherries, alcohol, and a cardboard-like note from the oak. Fairly sweet and dessert-like flavor of chocolate and espresso with a plummy, malty middle and finish. Nice roastiness. Bourbon notes are present but subdued in the flavor. Creamy, smooth palate. Great beer. BDR (2170), Roseville, Minnesota, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 8, 2004 Dark chestnut brown/black body, medium, dissipating tan head. Heavy vanilla and oak aroma followed by strong bourbon flavors (including said vanilla and oak) that complement the chocolate and roast backdrop. The tannin bitterness and roast almost cover up hints of licorice. Rich, oily body. A very good stout but the limitations of barrel-aging are becoming apparent as I try more and more examples of the style. NYHarvey (2154), New York, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Sep 14, 2005 Updated: May 10, 2009Thanks to Slob for this one. Aroma was dark roasted barley malt and mild coffee/vanilla notes with a whiff of alcohol. Deep black with a beuatiful thick head. I really warmed up to this. At first it was strange because rather than bourbon it seemed to me to taste like a full chocolate/coffee infused Stout up front and then very wine like in the finish. Almost tasted like wine poured into an Impy. But I really warmed up to it and enjoyed it immensely.
