Commercial Description:
This is an incredibly intriguing ale is made by aging our Old Heathen Imperial Stout in oak barrels that were used for making fine Kentucky bourbon! The result is an extraordinary, dark, and mysterious stout whose very essence has been enhanced. The aroma is filled with vanilla, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans. This silky-smooth brew has notes of oak, whiskey, roasted barley and vanilla that meld together on the tongue to create an incredible sensation. Heresy is released in February.

Based on notalush’s rating, this sounds like a very interesting concoction. No head on an opaquely black body. Thickly sweet molasses aroma, along with the bourbon. It smells sweet. The beer is a little astringent, though, and not quite as rich or heavy as I expect from an Imperial Stout. The finish is thin, but the flavor is pretty good. Such an interesting idea for a beer, but I’m not sure it works for me.

Black body with a fast disappering light brown head; Quite good but not to big a nose, some burnt barrel bourbon notes other wise smooth and soft; Soft textured body with a slight sour touch, as well as being a little thin, strange combo; Medium long finish where the bourbon aroma appears and somehow makes it a little thin and sharp, slightly sour with an oak vanilla warmth. Not to well composed, somehow it seems the initial beer has been to soft and not big enough for the barrel aging to do good.

Distinct oak/woody aroma with hints of vanilla, whiskey and coffee. Good lacing from an average head over a nearly black, red rimmed appearance. Full-bodied flavor with chocolate in the taste. Fairly sweet and malty. Smooth, moderately carbonated. Modest hoppiness with a long finish.

Chocolate aroma. Heavy carbonation. On first taste, not getting a lot of bourbon. A touch lingers. Vanilla. Coffee. Nice overall. But I would like more bourbon to come through.

From a 22oz Bottle. Pitch black pour of night with a well sustaining head of creamy marshmellow tan. Aromas of vanilla and milky chocolate malt balls drift from the glass, along with some gentle caramels and toasted oatmeal. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel - incredibly soft and silky feeling. Lots of vanilla and creamy oats in the flavors. The barrel character is restrained, definitely not overdone, and surprisingly leaves me wanting even more. The barrel aging doesn’t really come through until after the final smack, where some caramelly oak notes peak through. Thanks, Dan!

22 oz bottle, snifter. Caramel, chocolate, coffee, roasted malt (H); date, maderia, cask wood, butterscotch, brow sugar and bourbon aromas. Large, creamy/frothy, light brown head. Dark, black body. Heavily sweet, lightly acidic flavor becomes a moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter finish. Full body, oily/creamy texture, average carbonation. The bottom line is: fantastic! I don’t know how this changed so much from the Old Heathen (or where my rating of that beer went), but it was all for the better! Thanks Em!
