| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Nov 18, 2004 Thick, black & oily; short lived chocolate brown head. Diacetyl/butterscotch aroma immediately smacks the nose. Some light solventy alcohol and subtle bourbon aromas. Very little roasty or chocolate, and only hints of currants. Well balanced w/ a sweet caramel malty flavor, most of which comes from the diacetyl. Fruity alcohol is lightly raisiny w/a bourbon flavored aftertaste, which also includes...you guessed it...diacetyl. Aftertaste is bitter, but only slightly. So far I’m not impressed. Very little roasty flavor for a stout, and even less chocolate. Fuller body, smooth, lower carbonation, more than warming alcohol. Not a very impressive R.I.S. IMHO, especially since it’s barrel aged and should pick up more complexities that add to the beer. Prostman (1077), Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma is of coffee with dark chocolate, hops and alcohol. Softly carbonated, this beer features a medium-thick mouthfeel with smooth and complex dark flavor. I tasted espresso, dark roasted malts, brown sugar, hops, maybe a bit of bourbon-whisky, intense dark chocolate, and alcohol. The oak barrel really comes through at the end, with great effect: there is a sweet, roasty, vanilla-soft finish that mellows all the dark flavors together. Perhaps a bit too much alcohol present for a beer that has already been matured – I noticed this more the second time I had this brew on 5/9/08. This is still great beer, and at $5.50 a bomber, I would buy this again in a second rustychiles (1071), Mesa, Arizona, USA

About time Weyerbacher tries something other than being hung up on a damned stout, don’t you think? I mean, just how many ways can you package the same beer, and try to sell it? I for one am fed up with Weyerbacher selling the same old crap & putting a different label on it. jb (1063), Rochester, New York, USA

This is rich decadent complex stuff. The look is very very dark with red highlights. This is one fine beer.
By accident this happened to be my 666th rating... alobar (1056), Harleysville, Pennsylvania, USA
