COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is an incredibly intriguing ale is made by aging our Old Heathen Imperial Stout in oak barrels that were used for making fine Kentucky bourbon! The result is an extraordinary, dark, and mysterious stout whose very essence has been enhanced. The aroma is filled with vanilla, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans. This silky-smooth brew has notes of oak, whiskey, roasted barley and vanilla that meld together on the tongue to create an incredible sensation. Heresy is released in February.

Pours a dark brown to black with a thin tan ring. Medium carbonation with plenty of lacing. Strong aroma of whiskey. A little thin for a stout. Fairly smooth with some roasted malts. Alcohol is not too overpowering. Very enjoyable. Leaves a pleasant aftertaste.

Aromas of caramel, toffee, vanilla, milk chocolate. Black with a mostly lasting, small neige head. Initially sweet, some roasty nuances, like a creamy mocha latte, some whiskey booziness. Full bodied, very smooth, very drinkable especially considering the double-digit ABV.

Look - Small head was quick to develop and quick to dissipate. Tan medium bubbles head. Thick black body with brown edges. No sediment. No lacing. Smell - Sweet bourbon. Vanilla. Coffee. Chocolate. Light berry. Taste - Subdued bourbon. Chocolate. Coffee. Vanilla. Berry. Feel - Looks much heavier than it is but still heavy. Carbonation more apparent than look. Bitter bite on tongue. Overall - Lets call this Bourbon Barrel Aged Light. Average. I see myself hovering around 4 with ratings so take that in to account.

Bottle dated 02/17/15 (born on), 10/17/15 (best by). This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a slim finger’s worth of tan to off white foamy head that dissipated within less than about forty seconds. Slim clingy slightly foamy lacing roams around the glass nicely. The smell starts with rich dark fruits with a good amount of rich sweet milk chocolate and bitter dark chocolate. All three meld really nice. A dry sweet semi-chocolatey aftertaste runs into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping quality about it. Carbonation comes across really nice and low. The dryness hits my tongue the hardest but not overbearing. Overall, this was a pretty good Russian Imperial Stout but not a lot of whiskey barrel shows up. Maybe it was my timing but I wouldn’t mind trying again fresher.

Bottle. Very dark brown pour, nearly black, with a tan head. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, roasty chocolate and coffee, raisin, prunes. Flavour is much the same; a definite whisky note up front with lots of dried fruit and roasty notes at the end. Surprisingly sweet, perhaps a little cloying. Barrel aging definitely didn't mellow this out - rather just gave it a boozy whiskey note. Very tasty, but imbalanced.
