COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is an incredibly intriguing ale is made by aging our Old Heathen Imperial Stout in oak barrels that were used for making fine Kentucky bourbon! The result is an extraordinary, dark, and mysterious stout whose very essence has been enhanced. The aroma is filled with vanilla, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans. This silky-smooth brew has notes of oak, whiskey, roasted barley and vanilla that meld together on the tongue to create an incredible sensation. Heresy is released in February.

36 cl bottle @ home. 8% on the bottle, bottled 10.03.2011, BBE 10.11.2011
Aroma is harsh with peat some alcohol and hints of vanilla. Flavour has whiskey, vanilla, some peat, roasted malt and salti licorice. Aftertaste feels a lot like bourbon. Too much whiskey here, other elements are too well hidden behind the Bourbon. Disappointment.

On tap. Very dark brown pour, almost opaque, with a pretty thin khaki head and some soapy lacing. Aroma of chocolate, licorice, some barrel oak. Taste is the usual imperial - lots of coffee and bitter chocolate - but the oak works really well with it, smoothing everything out very nicely instead of coming off as cloying or distracting like in a lot of other barrel-aged stouts I’ve tried.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter. Extremely dark brown appearance in the body which ultimately evolves into a syrupy light brown, yet thin, head. Aroma is strong. Deep dark chocolate and coffee is surrounded by a dry bourbon coat. Taste is a dark fruity raisin start that moves into boozy Bourbon territory that finishes dry with some chalky dark chocolate bitter finish. Pretty thin mouth feel for an Imperial Stout, but very smooth.

Pours coffee black with a brown head. Aromas of chocolate and oak but not very powerful. Flavor is a decent blend of vanilla and some oak but seems to be a bit tame. it’s a decent offering but not really anything astounding at all.

Bottle from Downer Wine & Spirits. Pours an opaque black with a tan head leaving some nice lacing. Aroma has ... well, bourbon. Most of the way through the glass before something else than vanilla poked through. Some caramel and some roast finally made it. Taste is quite strongly sweet, alcoholly, vanilla. Underneath - eventually - is some malty caramel and oak. For as much bourbon as there is, the body is quite thin. Did not love Old Heathen, and, although the bourbon is well done, it is unbalanced to that side ... and the Old Heathen may not be enough to balance it ever. Certainly bottle age at the store is a possibility, but this fails the balance and body tests, despite the flavor being (vanilla-y) (alcoholly) solid.

Dark brown almost black, not opaque. Tight small lasting brown head. Roasty, lots of coffee, oak, vanilla, alcohol/whiskey. Lighter side of medium body, maybe a little too thin to me. A little dry. Long alcohol finish. Very impressive aroma. Alot of character in this beer. Nice sipper.

Black pour with tan head. Chocolate and whiskey aroma. Whiskey flavors are interesting combined with the stout malts and oak, but I’m not sure the flavors all meld as well as they could.

big with bourbon and vanilla mellowed and woody. some cocoa in the slickish finish. a sipper that has some good sugary sweetness well fused to the light roasted malt character. nothing fruity to muddle things up.

Smells oaky and like whiskey. Taste is very smooth, especially as this warms. As far as barrel aged go, this one isn’t that great. Didn’t really get much in terms of vanilla from this beer as the description says.

Bottle. I was not a fan of Old Heathen alone, but aging it in bourbon barrels makes an enormous difference.

Tried a pint dark black color with a small khaki head. Hints of bourbon dark smokey malts. Great tasting. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
