From a 12 oz bottle. Aroma is cocoa, chocolate, and a nice whiskey scent. Flavors are cocoa, chocolate, coffee, caramel, and whiskey. The whiskey is nice and faint, I get a nice tart after taste. One of the better beers I’ve had from this brewery.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 tdmuel (109) - South Carolina, USA - JUN 1, 2013
Bottle from 2012. Pour is nearly pitch black with a little light getting through on the edge, and a mocha head. Lots of vanilla and coffee on the nose, some oak, milk chocolate, lots of toasted malt, and some bourbon. Taste is a lot weaker than I was expecting, milk chocolate, some coffee, vanilla and caramel notes, a bit of oak and toasted malt. Smelled great, but the taste was a letdown. Almost a watery mouthfeel with not much of a finish. I’ll have to try a fresh bottle to compare.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jmalecki05 (22) - Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 1, 2013
Moderate aggressive pour. Beautiful chocolate milk froth - two fingers. Dark liquid. Aroma of bitter coffee and dark chocolate. Very light alcohol presense. Aroma becomes sweeter on the finish of the nose. Also notes of burnt raw sugar and brown sugar. Not what I was expecting on the palate, wanted more of a body for a stout. A little sweat upon the first sip and followed up with notes of whiskey/scotch barrels. Tast is of a traditional stout with zero hop bitterness, almost of a porter. At 8%, this beer is pleasantly sessionable with no alcohol burn. Not a complex beer, but overall enjoyable. Wouldja - Yes.

Bottle pours jet black with a small tan head. Nose of bourbon. Taste starts with chocolate and roast. Quickly invaded by bourbon. The onslaught continues in the finish.

12 oz bottle at Sybarite Pig. Jet black pour with dark mocha head. Heavy malt aroma with toasted nuts, dark chocolate and prunes. Taste is more mild than anticipated. Rich roasted malts, cocoa, dark fruits, and booze. Well balanced. Smooth finish. Very good.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours an opaque black color. The head is a one finger tan shade that retains surprisingly well for a barrel-aged RIS (though perhaps not given its ABV). A good ring of lacing is left on the glass.
S: There’s a bourbon character here - and it’s a wholly decent one at that. Notes of vanilla, charred oak, and coconut complement the chocolaty, roasty base.
T: Wow, I’m surprised how heavily the barrel character comes through. The opening chocolate sweetness is quickly supplanted by vanilla and coconut in the middle. It finishes with strong charred oak and a returning hint of powdered chocolate. This one lacks complexity - great chocolate character, though.
M: Tannic with a capital T. The lighter body and dry finish means this comes out more strongly than, say, BCBS. However, there’s still a lingering sweetness on the aftertaste. If I have a (big) problem, it’s that the texture seems almost inadequately thin and angular on the palate given the sweetness level. The good drinkability can’t compensate, either.
O: This is a poor man’s BCBS in every sense of the word. It’s not as decadent, not as big, not as flavorful, not as hard to find, and not as expensive. The mouthfeel is underwhelming, but I can really see this as a great introduction to barrel-aged imperial stouts. Hell, I’d gladly pick it up again myself.

Bottle shared in GTMW line - Pours deep brown with a thin tan head. Nose has prominent whiskey, lightly sharp with mellow, medium roast malt. Taste is the same--dry malt and a mellow, sweet whiskey heat. Warm the mouth, though it’s surprisingly thin and watery. Not bad.

Pours black, smells like BOURBON, coffee and chocolate. Tastes like chocolate and coffee. Little bit of malt, boozy mouthfeel. Delicious.
