Blithering Idiot Barleywine aged 4.5yrs on American oak, refermented w/ Brett.

Idiot’s drool is Blithering Idiot barrel aged for 4.5 years. A full-bodied, deep burgundy ale with an incredibly complex character. Extended aging has imbued this beer with notes of vanilla, oak, leather and sweet sherry. A mild acidity and subtle carbonation rounds out the palate. 840 bottle brewery only release.

(trade w/LIVEFAST) 750ml bottle - Poured pretty much flat. Zero head. Body is absolutely murky brown. Aroma of boiled raisins. Flavors interesting. Muted tones from the Brett. Detect notes of boiled raisins and old leather. Sides of glass are coated with a bit of sediment as the beer level goes down. Reminds me of a murky dry sherry or oxidized port wine. Hard to believe this is 12% alcohol. Wish it wasn’t so sludgy, and there were some bubbles in there.

750ml bottle. Cloudy brown color with almost no head. Flat body as the pour suggests. Woody, caramel, with some lighter funkiness. Some dark fruits in the tastes as well.

Pours a clear caramel color with no head. Aroma is caramel and some vinegar. Tatse is sour and sweet. Thin and clearly infected. I was the only one who thought it was interesting.

750 ml bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of bourbon, oak, prune, raisin, brown sugar and light maple. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a tart finish. Flavors of bourbon, oak, maple, brown sugar and fruittiness with a smooth tart lingering maple finish.

Bottle… Admittedly, I don’t know what this beer is all about. Haven’t read anything about it – including the label. Haven’t even heard of it. This happens at tastings at dimly-lit beer bars. Hazy burnt-caramel ale with a red glimmer and negligible head. To me, this smells like a strong, American-style barleywine aged in a red wine barrel. Acidic, tannic notes. Medium to full-bodied and a bit chewy with almost no carbonation. The flavor is a mishmash of elements both sweet and sour – caramel and sour cherries mostly. Tart, Mojave-dry finish. I like this. Seems like I’m the only one at the table who does. OK, finally looking at all the ratings. I guess Dan and I are the only two people on the planet that like this beer. Well, so be it. Different strokes and all that.

Old oxidized nose, with sherry notes, oaky, caramelized, dark figgy fruit. Picking up just a little barrel funk.
