COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Insanity, first released November 2004, is Weyerbacher's latest creation in the world of cutting edge beers. Insanity is made by aging our perfectly balanced Blithering Idiot Barleywine in oak bourbon casks. This incredible combination creates a melange of flavors such as malt, dates, oak, vanilla, and bourbon just to name a few.

Sweet alcohol, caramel, oak & bourbon on the aroma. Appearance is a cloudy brown with an off white head with low head retention. Flavor is malty, candy like sweet. Notes of licorice and dried plums. Oak is prevalent throughout the taste. Mouthfeel is full with medium carbonation. Overall, it's decent. Too sweet for my taste though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours hazy reddish brown color with no head or lacing. Aroma of caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, and a little bourbon. Tastes of bourbon with caramel under tones. A nice winter drink

Pours a murky cola brown with a one finger tan head with pretty nice lacing. Aroma is of dark fruits, caramel, bready malts, bourbon, vanilla, oak, and some light booze. Taste is similar to the aroma with the addition of of some tofee and butterscotch notes and maybe just a tad more booze. Has a medium-full body with a pretty creamy mouthfeel and a mostly sweet, warming, long lingering, slighty hot finish. Overall, a well crafted BA Barleywine that Is a great after dinner sipper.

Bottle from Hop City, Atlanta. 2013 vintage. Pours an ominous caramel brown, viscous-looking, with lots of particulate. Aroma lovely, citrus, resin, caramel. Body slightly dry, sweet, but still slightly hot, some vanilla, tannic notes.

12oz bottle into tulip. Minneapolis. Appearance: Brownish-amber. Mostly opaque because of the color, but there is some transparency. Little to no head. Aroma: Bourbon (though less pronounced that I was hoping for), vanilla, oak, dark fruits. Taste: mildly sweet upfront. Palate: Full body. Carbonation gives a bit of a sharp edge to the finish. Flavor lasts medium length. Overall: Middle of the road as far as barley wines go. Flavor is not very strong, especially for being barrel aged. Palate is much sharper than I would have liked. Maybe it will improve with age

UPDATED: NOV 9, 2014 Bottle: Murky, looks like shitty swamp water. Not much head, a few bubbles at the top. Smells a little sour. Tart red apple, light raisin, hint of toffee & some faint caramel. Taste is a touch of sour, but not in an infected sense. Just a touch of sweet prune, dark fruit. More sweetness on the palate. Caramel, sticky toffee candy, little vanilla. Back-end is more woody & full of a nice bourbon belch. Some more prune, toffee, & a touch of anise. Lingering caramel & wood. Slightly sticky mouth feel. Not bad, but the aroma is weird.

12 oz bottle. BB 12/16/2018. (Bruisin Ales) Asheville, NC.
Mid-brown colour with a tiny light tan head. Whiskey sweetness, wood and sweet malt in the aroma. The flavour is whiskey, sweetness, vanilla, bitterness, malt and more sweetness. The barrel ageing is very obvious. It’s a bit too sweet for my liking. Great brew nevertheless.

"surprise wish list item during a random Wednesday tasting. Rich tofee and caramel, ample bourbon and boozy flavors and aroma amidst a sweet fruity flavor. Little in the way of hops. Not balanced, but very tasty."

Transfer from BA review on 3-11-13- Served on tap in a chalice glass Appearance – Served a hazed copper colored brew with a one half finger white head. The head fades very quickly leaving a light level of lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell- The nose is big of a bready, caramel, and fruit aroma. The fruit is a mix of both light and dark with the darker fruit smells winning out over the light. Smells of raisin, cherry, and prune are mixed with lighter notes of pear and banana. With these smells comes a light oaky and vanilla smell as well as a decently boozy smell of a more bourbon nature. Taste – The taste begins malty and caramel and stone fruit sweet. There is a big bready base with large amounts of caramel sweetness with lighter notes of a cherry, prune and plum sweetness. As the flavors advance some of the oaky flavors begin developing further with the sweet fading ever so slightly, but remaining rather strong none the less. Toward the end of the taste the boozy notes that were detected in the nose come to the tongue. The flavors, largely of a bourbon nature, blend well with the sweet caramel and fruit leaving a nice thick warming sweet taste on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that was a bit on the lower side. The thicker body and thinner carbonation were both quite nice for keeping this a sipping brew as well as for allowing for the sweeter and maltier flavors of the brew to really pronounce themselves with the warming boozy taste that is present. Overall- A great sipping brew if I do say so myself. Not too overpowering, but definitely strong and flavorful enough with just the right amount of warming kick from the boozy taste to make it quite and enjoyable warmer.
