COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Insanity, first released November 2004, is Weyerbacher's latest creation in the world of cutting edge beers. Insanity is made by aging our perfectly balanced Blithering Idiot Barleywine in oak bourbon casks. This incredible combination creates a melange of flavors such as malt, dates, oak, vanilla, and bourbon just to name a few.

On tap at Sunset Grille and Tap, Allston, MA. Aroma is malted with nice caramel tones covering up a little vanilla. Hardly any alcohol noticeable. There are some notes of hoppiness there as well. Doesn’t look much different than other offerings - a nice amber with the thinest of heads that stays put. Taste backs up the malt, caramel, and vanilla with a nice heady dose of woody bourbon and there’s the alcohol heat. Very nice. Body is medium and sticky sweet with a little carbonation. Finish is lasting. The sweet vanilla tastes stays around longer than expected. I had forgotten how good this beer really is. I haven’t had Insanity in about a year but I will be picking some more up shortly.

12 oz bottle, poured into a snifter at ~40 degrees F. Appearance: Pours a nearly opaque ruddy bronze-brown, and forms a thin head of off-white foam that quickly dies to a ring, and evaporates completely by halfway through the snifter. There is no lacing. Smell: Boozy caramel malt suffused with raisin and cherry wells out of the glass, alongside a bready scent. Taste: Caramel suffused with fruits, specifically cherry, fig, and date, opens the flavor palate. Breadiness joins in as it moves along the palate, and there’s more than a hint of boozy liquor along for the ride as well. Touches of oak appear, alongside a faint mix of spice and smoke, and very vaguely, vanilla. The finish leaves a vaguely boozy, vaguely medicinal residue clinging to the tongue. Mouthfeel: Thick, rich, creamy, sticky, and silky-smooth. Overall: Of late, I’ve been chased away from the world of barleywines by experiencing too many American barleywines that triggered my hop sensitivity, and had forgotten how much I enjoy a potent, complex English barleywine. This beer reminded me that I place a solid English barleywine up in my pantheon of beers alongside a good doppelbock, eisbock, wee heavy, and quad. Well done, Weyerbacher. Well done.

Pours a murky brown caramel with a thin head. Aroma had notes of whiskey, dark fruits, slightly tart fruits, oak, vanilla cream, and caramel/toffee. Taste is a balanced sweet with lots of bourbon whiskey, oak, vanilla, dark fruits, caramel, and a bitter/sweet ending. Meduim-full body with a low carbonation. Mildly syrupy texture in the mouth with a dry finish. Overall well done. Whiskey barrel, dark fruits, caramel, and a very slight tart fruit.

Gedronken met Benzai, thanks!!!!! Doet me denken aan sterke drank. Zacht, veel alcohol.

Bottle at home thanks to Mac. Pours a reddish brown, little tan head. Aroma is caramel, fruit, toast, light cocoa, oak and vanilla. Taste is fruity, dates, vanilla and oak. Nice bourbon barrel notes on the finish. Lots of flavor. Whoa. Not my favorite style though. Some good flavors, but I still can’t seem to really enjoy barley wine.

Draft sample at the Craft Bar PCB. Bronze colored pour. Aroma was sweet syrup and caramel. The flavor starts with simple sugars, a touch of coconut and light bitterness in the finish. Good barley wine.

Bottle @ home. Dark amber to copper colour with a small white head. Smells very sweet, barley wine, alcohol, slightly raisins. Typical barleywine if you ask me. Tastes horribly sweet, baverois, barley wine, extra sweet apricot. Sick. Alcoholic. Full body, soft carbo.

12 oz bottle nicely dated with both the bottling date (30-Dec.-2014) and the BB date (Dec. 2019). The beer pours with a clear red-brown body and a small head that quickly reduces to a ring. Aroma: fruity, malty, boozy, oaky and inviting. There’s also a hint of vanilla. Taste: More complex than the smell. Dark fruits, vanilla, faint wood, dark bread and a hint of pepper. Mouthfeel: wonderfully smooth with minimal adverse effects of the 11.1% ABV. The beer is full bodied and lightly sticky with little carbonation. Overall: an excellent and refined barleywine.

madvike (3072) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - APR 2, 2015
Bottle - Pours murky dark brown with rosy highlights and a filmy off-white head. Nose is buttery, bready malt, caramel and butterscotch, sharp whiskey, and a bit of woodiness. Taste is better, with the mellow whiskey melding better with vanilla, caramel, butterscotch, light toasty oak, and doughy yeasty and bread malt. Finish is long, sweet, and warming, with more whiskey. Medium and slick, with medium carbonation.

Bottle [from trade with mista] @ home. Hazy red color, medium sized beige head. Aroma is malts, slightly alcohol, sweetness, overripe fruits. Taste malts, sweetness, overripe fruits, a hint of vanilla somehow, some alcohol. Full body, suitable medium carbonation. Pretty good barley wine, I quite like it.
