Lima is up next and no, we did not make a lima bean beer or anything inspired by the Peruvian capital city. We made a relatively new style (new to GABF) called an “American-Style India Black Ale”. The name is pretty self explanatory, but you’ve already had a beer or two so I’ll explain. It is like taking a traditional IPA and adding dark malts which add color and a moderate roasty character. It is still in the tank as I type, but we have added nearly 5.5 pounds of hops per barrel making this beer as sticky as any we have ever made. It should end up being around 6.3% ABV and will tip the IBU scale at around 70

On draft at Redlight Redlight. This one pours a nearly pitch black color with some mahogany at the edges and topped by a thick, tan colored head of foam that slowly settles to a thin film leaving rings of lace around the glass. The aroma shows a good amount of orange and grapefruit citrus hops along with some pine resin notes. The base is of black patent malt, and good amount of barley roast, which enhances the bitterness. The flavor follows suit with the roast, pine, and citrus hops up front followed by hints of smoke and black malt. The roast and hops really add to the bitterness level, but I would like to some more balance. Medium bodied, but a touch thin with balanced carbonation that leads to a semi-dry and bitter finish. Lots of hops and roast in this black ipa. Nice stuff.

It’s an IPA in a Stouts clothing! Pours nearly black with a thick rich tan head. Aroma is nearly exactly that of an IPA. The taste is smoky and dark with a bit of sweetness and a dry bitter finish. The only part that is off-putting is a bit of a sour flavor that lingers for a moment at the finish. Overall a very interesting combination.

On tap at Capone’s last Saturday. Pours near black with a nice, tan head and a good amount of lacing as it went down. Smell is puzzling, as there’s really nothing there. I get the faintest whiff of hops, but can’t really discern anything about them. Likewise, the roast from the flavor isn’t really coming through either. The taste is a big improvement, with some nice, resinous pine hops with a bit of citrus. Roasted malt as well. Nice dryness from both factors. Good drinkability; an all-around tasty CDA. A dark reddish brown IPA with a thin off white head. A very classic IPA aroma with pungeant c-hops overlayed with burned coffee beans. In mouth, a hop bomb with stringent c-hops, white grapefruits, bilous notes, strong black coffee, a bit unbalanced. On tap at RFD, Sept. 18 2010.

Aroma is predominantly American hopswith maybe a slight hint of malt. Nice strong bitterness, not as much roast as I expect from a black IPA. Medium to medium heavy body, mouth feel nice and smooth with a bit bite from the coronation. Overall a decent IPA.
