Sweet aroma of dark figs, malts and resin. Beer has a bubble-bath-like foam covering a dark beer that could be mistaken as a stout until one tastes the hoppy citrus bite which I really dig. They say traditional IPA with malts added but I detect and smell a citrus kick that West Coasters could appreciate. The malts do overpower a bit and kind of give it an off smokiness which I sense in the finish (almost ashy). Thumbs up from both me and my wife (the female palate always gets consulted when I review brews).

Bottle Pours an oily black with a thin lasting tan head. Spotty lacing. A good aroma from the first pour. Spruce, licorice, roasted malts, cocoa, and some floral citrus. Has a good carbonation. the flavor is hoppy bitter. has a good mouthfeel. The texture is oily. A medium body. A very slight burn. Has a strong finish and a great lingering aftertaste. If you like hops this is it. Great bitterness and real smooth.

Draft at Capone’s. Pours dark blackish brown with minimal off-white head. Nose is dark malt, hops, cacao. Tastes of roasted dark malt, a lot of hops in the flavor, notes of cacao, pretty dense on the palate. I still have a hard time getting my grips on the black IPA style, but this one is well made and a solid example of this relatively new style, reminding me somewhat of the Stone black IPA offerings.

On draft at Capone’s. Pours a translucent black with a slight head. Roasted notes with a powerful hop aroma. Very, very roasted flavor, almost bitter burnt tones. Almost overpowering. The hops balance it out nicely, but this was a lot more black than ipa.

Tap at capones. Pours a deep woody copper/brown with a nice tight tan head- some lace. Aroma is nutty, light roast, herbal, slight grass and very piney but as it warms there is a slight fruity character and some woodsy dank weed. Flavor is toasted malts, light roast, nutty, hints of chocolate, grassy hops, earth some dirt and mineral with slight char, but gets a bit better as it warms- and opens up a bit of dank hops and pine resin. A slight bit harsh in the finish and resinous bitter in the back of the throat.

Tap at Churchkey, courtesy of Nahem and Paul, thank you sirs! I have to say, I am really liking this black IPA style. This one has an aroma of pine forests and lemon trees, with a taste of gritty blackness and a bitter finish. Very nice stuff.
