Lima is up next and no, we did not make a lima bean beer or anything inspired by the Peruvian capital city. We made a relatively new style (new to GABF) called an “American-Style India Black Ale”. The name is pretty self explanatory, but you’ve already had a beer or two so I’ll explain. It is like taking a traditional IPA and adding dark malts which add color and a moderate roasty character. It is still in the tank as I type, but we have added nearly 5.5 pounds of hops per barrel making this beer as sticky as any we have ever made. It should end up being around 6.3% ABV and will tip the IBU scale at around 70

Tap at Churchkey, courtesy of Nahem and Paul, thank you sirs! I have to say, I am really liking this black IPA style. This one has an aroma of pine forests and lemon trees, with a taste of gritty blackness and a bitter finish. Very nice stuff.

Lubiere (12954) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 25, 2010
A dark reddish brown IPA with a thin off white head. A very classic IPA aroma with pungeant c-hops overlayed with burned coffee beans. In mouth, a hop bomb with stringent c-hops, white grapefruits, bilous notes, strong black coffee, a bit unbalanced. On tap at RFD, Sept. 18 2010.

(12oz bottle, courtesy of Mora2000) Pours a clear mahogany body with a small beige head. Aroma of citrus, florals, toasted grain, light coffee, cocoa, and caramel. Flavor of roasted malt, caramel, some chocolate, citrus, and herbs.

jcwattsrugger (12198) - Florida and, New Jersey, USA - OCT 29, 2010
on tap @Andys-pours a tan head and dark brown color. Aroma is pine hops, some roasty-dark malt. Taste is pine hopes, some roasty-dark malt.

Drake (11913) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - OCT 28, 2010
Served on draft at Beer Run on 10/1/10. Pours a nearly opaque dark chocolate brown color with ruby highlights. Medium creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of bitter earthy and leafy hops. The taste is citrus, leafy, vegetal and nearly wet hop notes with a faint bit of chocolate malts. Thin-medium bodied. This is just an IPA with some dark coloring. Definitely does not live up to the style.

hopdog (11593) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 10, 2010
On tap at Capone’s. Poured a dark black color with a smaller sized off white head. Lacing left on the glass. Aromas of floral hops, some citrus and roasty. Tastes of roastiness, floral, pine, and citrus.

DocLock (9999) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 20, 2010
Draft at Capone’s. Pours dark blackish brown with minimal off-white head. Nose is dark malt, hops, cacao. Tastes of roasted dark malt, a lot of hops in the flavor, notes of cacao, pretty dense on the palate. I still have a hard time getting my grips on the black IPA style, but this one is well made and a solid example of this relatively new style, reminding me somewhat of the Stone black IPA offerings.

pression @ OTH. Couleur brune foncée, mousse blanc-cassé. Arôme, garde un cote houblon-citron qui est nettement plus en avant que certaines autres bières du même style. Ce dernier domine le nez alors que le malt reste en retrait. Goût, fine amertume de houblon et citron, allant parfois vers un aspect feuilles de thé vertes. Cette bière est plus houblonnée, suivit de malt grillé qui au fur et a mesure gagne en note chocolat. Le fini reste plus amer et domine par le houblon.

Deep black pour. The aroma is lightly peppery and a bit roasty. Some unusual molasses flavour through the middle. Assertively hopped and fairly lean although the hops are kind of herbal. Odd - although maybe that’s good. Very hoppy.

From the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center Denver 17/09/2010 Hoppy aroma. Dark coloured strong in alcohol hoppy and fruity with a citrus flavour. A hint of dryness in a crisp bitter and nutty malt finish.
