4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aroma is chocolate, roast malt, but faint. No hops. Pitch black beer, with no light passing through. Head is dark tan, but fades to nothing very quickly. Flavor is huge dark malt, chocolate, roast, with characteristics of raisins, and some sherry notes. Palate is thin for style. Could use more body behind the alcohol level.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
after a young's oatmeal stout, this heathen ramps up the cocoa-coffee malts, pitch, and potency very nicely. the beverage is black as a cosack's boot heel, with a thick oak-colored welcome mat of head on top: one that laces in undulating stalagtyte-toothy caverns. nose is moderate, but amid alcohol notes, sweet-burnt fragrances arise-- like tossing clumps of brown sugar on embers. flavor is big and peaty: what an epicurean earth-worm must experience biting into the sweet blackened loam of a riverbottom. not a huge imperial, okay, but the compact body of evidence is still convincing, the more so as articulate hops deliver the closing remarks-- issues dealing at length with burnt oreos and bitter orange. a veritable kurt vonnegut "old heathen": sophisticated, sweet and mellow, not overbearing, but capable of great sardonic bite...

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2003 Smoked coffee, choclate aroma, most noatably the coffee. The color is a solid black, and little bit foam lingering around the edge of the beer. Flavor is a little thin. It does have the nice trademark imperial stout flavor.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled at From The Vine monthly beer tasting Aug 4th, 2003: Pours a nice thick dark borwn with a medium dark beige head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, coffee and oats. The body is not as big and bold as I like in an Imperial Stout but it is still good. Basically all the things I love about the flavor of this style - Roasty malt, caramel, alcohol, chocolate and coffee - are all here but in less quantity than the greats like Dark Lord, Siberian Night Rasputin and Stone. The finish is a little hoppier than those too. This beer is on the verge of being an excellent example of the style. A little more richness and complexity and it will be there.

This is a very good Imperial. Jet black and very thick, this would be a great addition to a cold winter night and a warm fire.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Inviting aroma, spicy, chocolatey, fruity and sweet, with notes of brown sugar, creamy mocha, charcoal, roasted barley, plum and licorice, among others. Deep ebony in color, with an intricate, fine head and delicate lacing. Flavor is roasty, grainy and sweet, with semi-sweet chocolate, smokiness, toffee, port wine, raisin and highly roasted coffee. Finish is long and warming. Thick, tangy mouthfeel. Very good. Thanks Trap.

An excellent stout. Strong roasted coffee aroma and taste. Fizzed a bit, which turned me off. But very smooth to drink and very enjoyable.

Pours a deep black with lots of bubbles that fade very fast. Strong coffee\fresh expresso aroma. Very bitter tasting and dry. After taste is a strong roasted coffee mixed with slight hints of chocolate.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
aroma of instant coffee and steaming asphalt. full variety of earthy, burnt flavours and the predictable citric, pineapple hop attack, at least a little more subdued than in some of this style

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Deep black, tan head. Roasty, almost like espresso. Some dark chocolate is present as well. Alcohol is well hidden. An excellent Imperial.
