lebshiff21 (85), Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 13, 2008 Pours opaque, almost no head (my bottle has been cellaring for about 4 months). Came out of the fridge a little too cold, after it warmed up a little the aroma really started coming out. Obvious coffee and dark fruits in the nose. Same coffee across the palate along with dark chocolate and malts. Overall a very good IS. kmeves (1080), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA Oct 11, 2008 Pours a pitch black topped with a medium sized mocha colored head. Aroma is lightly sweet fruit and very strong Cafe Americano. Flavor is coffee, chocolate and just a bit malty sweetness. Light to medium body, creamy texture. Alcohol very well hidden. smith4498 (816), Miami, Florida, USA Oct 10, 2008 Pours black with small brown head. Aromas of roasted malts and mocha. Sweet roated malt flavor with some chocolate and hop bitterness. Full body with above average carbonation for a stout and a thick mouthfeel. A solid, well made imp stout. jrmac (210), USA Oct 5, 2008 I have learned to expect greatness from Weyerbacher. Nose is spot on for an Imperial stout. Aromas of chocolate, espresso, caramel malt. Tastes is similar. Big and creamy. Awesome beer. BeerBelcher (930), Columbus, Ohio, USA Sep 29, 2008 The world is full of great Russian Imperial Stouts. In fact, it’s rare to find one on this site without a glowing review. But I found this one to be very....average. We just got distribution of Weyerbacher here in Wisconsin, and everyone’s excited (this flavor of the month excitement goes back a year or so - we got Stone this summer, Southern Tier a little before that, etc), but that excitement for me didn’t turn into a greatly favorable impression of this particular beer.
It pours black and a bit thin, with a very modest amount of head. Aroma is faint but reminiscent of dark malt, roastiness, and chocolate. Flavor is same, but I was distracted by this due to some wateriness and a very faint flavor (particularly for this style of beer).
This beer wasn’t bad, it just doesn’t compare to many others of the style. Still, I’d have it again and weakly recommend it. I bought a 6-pack at Discount Liquor in Milwaukee. Juelze (889), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Sep 27, 2008 Pours a dark black color with thin white head. Aroma is of dark fruit, anise, chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is of light licorice, chocoalte, and roasted malt. Mild carbonation. Full bodied and delicisous. Petrucci914 (574), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Sep 27, 2008 Pours a pitch black with a medium mocha head that leaves streaks of lacing. Aroma is wet coffee grounds with some malt sweetness. Taste is chocolate, roasted malts, with a hint of hop sweetness. Pretty good. TheBeerBaron (218), Florida, USA Sep 27, 2008 Pitch black color and soapy brown head. Impossible ot see any carbonation bubbles but easy to see the lace on the glass. Chicory and chocolate aroma, and heavy malt smell. A strange cinnamon scent gives this an interesting spicy smelling finish. Bruisingly bold flavor, lots of chocolate and burnt malt. There must be a good amount of hops in this beer because the flavor is not malty sweet. for evident reasons this 8% stout has a thick palate but its a good thing. This unhearalded stout is a definite surprise.
