Poured a nice black color with a moderate tan head that diminished to a ring. Aroma of sweet licorice, a bit of fruit, and a little chocolate. Interesting taste for an imperial stout also. Tastes almost like choclate covered cherries with hints of licorice and works its way into a slightly roasty. Nice and creamy on the palate. I guess I would agree that this may not be a true imperial stout, it is a nice change up and an interesting beer. Big thanks to Ryan for sending me this beer. blklab2007 (954), Connecticut, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 24, 2008 Updated: Mar 16, 2008bottle poured into a snifter had a good rush of carbonation and a one finger head of dense dark tan froth. color is black with little light penetrating. aroma has plumb, malt, raisin, and caramel. mouth feel is medium with some oily coating and good carbonation present on the tongue. flavor is malted with a light roast, plenty of dark fruits, hit of sweet caramel, and not much alcohol present for the 8.2%. has a certain creaminess to it and is rich but i don’t know if it quite hits the imperial level. does have some nice dried dark fruit flavor going for it. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 23, 2008 Deep black color that pours with a small 1-finger chocolate milk-colored head. Disappears pretty quickly. Dark malted nose with a little bit of bitter alcohol and sweet and sour cherry. A rich roasted coffee flavor with a hint of fruit sweetness that finishes with burnt bitterness. Definitely some caramel notes in there as well. A little bit less body than I expected, but still very good. GMCC2181 (855), Bear/Elkton, Delaware, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 23, 2008 I had this out of a growler...Pours black with a small brown head. Chocolatey with some hops. It has a very "roasty" flavor. It was thick but not to thick. Really good stout. Zinister (1199), Houston, Texas, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 20, 2008 Foam Rangers January meeting. Brownish black with small head. Nose is chocolate, coffee and some hops...with a bit of fruit in the back. Taste is much the same, but has cherries in it as well...which gives it added dimension. Thanks to CanIhave4beers for giving me another opportunity to try this. Silky mud. A small but nice amount of burnt toast. Pretty good mix of dark malts. Little bit of diacetyl. Some off fruitiness. 7/4/7/3/15.5-3.65 xmarcnolanx (792), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 13, 2008 I get this strange alcoholic rum aroma from this, along with some red fruit.
Taste is red fruit, coffee and chocolate. Finish is slightly lacking with some club soda and then drops off. DannyP (29), Connecticut, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 12, 2008 Pours a dark brown/black with a small, quickly diminishing brown head. Aroma is Chocolatey espresso with a touch of hops.
Nice lacing on the glass, the chocolate espresso goodness I originally noticed in the aroma is much less noticeable in the flavor of the beer.
Complex palate, as the commercial description says, it’s got a very "roasty" flavor, hard to describe well the flavor, very complex with many different notes.
Not a bad brew at all, I’d prefer it to be a little more strongly carbonated is all.
