KieferUGA (461), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Nov 2, 2007 12 oz. bottle. Pours dark black with a small, khaki head with a bit of lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee, some chocolate, hints of alcohol. Flavor is semi-sweet chocolate with a hint of fruit notes. A bit thin for my taste, but definitely drinkable on a nice fall afternoon. RollinHard (748), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Nov 1, 2007 Thanks to Jasonmech77 for this. Pours black with a khaki tan head that dissipates somewhat quickly. The Aroma on this is oddly similar to the Quad. A lot of chocolate covered cherries on the nose, sweet booze, wood, coffee liquer, and maybe some plums. Flavor has a bit more roast to it, some dark chocolate, cherries, wood and booze. Gentle finish of roasted nuts, toffee, and stronger roasted coffee. slight raisin flavor on the throat. Mouthfeel is medium for the style, fairly highly carbonated, and pretty creamy. I can taste alcohol, but I feel no heat. Overall, this is pretty interesting, especially with how fruity the aroma is. I think it suffers a bit from being too easy going though. There’s other styles for that. gpekar (221), Maryland, USA Nov 1, 2007 Updated: Nov 15, 2007This is a great beer. Dark, dark brown almost black in color. The head is a thick coffee & cream color. Initial taste of licorice, strong and smooth with a very complex taste and aroma. BossHossBikes (147), Tennessee, USA Oct 29, 2007 Bottle. The pour is black with a tan head. The head didn’t impress me as it seemed to be quickly diminishing and consisted of relatively large bubbles. The aroma starts off with a sour tanginess like a licorice. There are submissive hints of espresso and chocolate. It’s very milky and slightly oily as it hits the tongue. The taste of slightly roasted espresso hits then gradually diminishes as a milky sweetness, like a milk chocolate, becomes more apparent. I’m used to the hoppy imperial stouts, so this caught me off guard. I like it, though. ScottB (73), Bristow, Virginia, USA Oct 26, 2007 Snifter. Rich black in color. Smoky, malty, chocolate nose. Very complex in the mouth. I get milk chocolate,(reminds me of a milk stout a little) a hint of cherry, and some dried fruit toward the end. On the heavy side of medium body-wise. Coats the mouth. Bittersweet finish. sheatripper (863), Brooklyn, New York, USA Oct 16, 2007 12 oz. bottle. Black body w/ brown head yeah? Aroma of dark chocolate covered raisins with some espresso, molasses and a touch of black licorice. Roasty, approaching smoky dark chocolate malt flavor with some mild fruity tartness in the background. Finishes with charred leaf notes and some more tartness at the very end. Competent Impy. brown2112 (8), Augusta, Georgia, USA does not count Oct 11, 2007 Black without much (if any) head. Aroma is decent but it’s very faint. It seemed like it was going to be a run of the mill imperial stout, but this medium-bodied, smooth finished beer has an outstanding flavor. FlacoAlto (2473), Tucson, Arizona, USA Oct 5, 2007 2005 release, Sampled October 2007
Pours with a one finger thick, light brown colored head that sits atop an opaque, black colored brew. The aroma is quite concentrated with notes of roasted, dried figs, cherries, a touch of sherry, light chocolate notes, smooth espresso roast coffee beans, and a touch of alcohol, which adds some fruit-brandy like notes here that is quite distinct. An aged character has thinned out the malt a bit here, but seems to have smoothed things out quite a bit as well.
This has somewhat of a light body, at least for an Imperial Stout, but it does have some heft to it which provides some palate coating character and body to this brew. The taste has a touch of caramelized, slightly roasted sweetness to it and it is actually fairly fruity tasting as well (raisins, figs, perhaps a hint of cherry, and even some notes of prunes; all of which have been roasted / burnt to one degree or other). Chalky chocolate malt notes and roasted grain flavors (reminiscent of smooth espresso) linger in the finish as does a very slight, hop bitterness. A burnt plum character becomes more prominent as the beer warms up a bit. This is quite smooth tasting & feeling, though it could be a touch too thin.
This has clearly aged in the two years since bottling, perhaps a bit more than expected, but it is still a tasty brew and would even age gracefully for at least another couple of years.
