tjthresh (1745), Greenfield, Indiana, USA Nov 24, 2006 12 ounce bottle from Thiachilie. Used motor oil black with a red and brown fizzy head that disapated as quickly as it formed. Lots of esspresso, chocolate, licorice, and dates in the aroma. Plenty of roast in the flavor. Some Hershey’s chocolate syrup. Bitter finish. Light oily body. Average for an imperial stout. decaturstevo (1971), decatur, Tennessee, USA Nov 22, 2006 Thanks to Ty5592. A dark black pour with a guey off white lacing. A nose of chocolotto and fruitiness of raisins or some other dried fruit. A very well balanced beer. The alc and malt just seem to mesh into a very pleasing experience. Just the slightest warmth from this beer. The palate was smooth and well textrued but just a hint of weak palate. A very good beer. thanks ty MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 16, 2006 Bottle, Pored almost black with brown head. Caramel/roasted aroma. Flavor much the same but a good balance. Slightly bitter finish. GOOD BREW. Brigadier (1211), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Nov 15, 2006 12 oz bottle
This bottle was acquired in a recent trade with The Epeeist. It did not have a date, so I have no idea the age of the bottle. I am assuming it was fresh rather than aged. It was not bad, but the problem with imperial stouts is that given the competition it is hard to stand out. This one was average at best.
I would drink it on a regular basis depending on how much it cost. Some of the others are great but pricey.
Aroma / Appearance - A slightly watery liquid flowed from the bottle into my snifter. It looked like a standard imperial stout - murky black with a tan head sitting on top forming a small protective layer. The lacing clung to the sides of the glass leaving a nice trail. The aroma reminded me of blueberries, mocha, dark chocolate, cherries and raisins. There was an interesting combination of smoke and vinous notes.
Flavor / Palate - The first sip reminded me of drinking fresh hot chocolate on a cool fall day next to a blazing bonfire. Smoke, chocolate and roasted expresso formed a pleasing opening impression. There were fruity undertones towards the middle of the bottle with a trace amount of hops and burnt toast at the edges. The mouthfeel felt a little thin to be called imperial though it was not in any way bad. With a little more body this one would easily be a 4 - I have to give it a 3.4 due to the thinness and the lack of complexity. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Nov 11, 2006 12oz bottle acquired from sliffy, no date. Pours a fairly thick black with a brown head all the way to the top of my snifter--strange for the style. The head is creamy and slowly fading. Aroma of milk chocolate, roasted malts, a bit of grain, darker fruits. Taste is actually pretty fruity for a RIS with a little bit of strawberries and figs, otherwise the same as the aroma. Dry finish, though not really any bitterness. Carbonation is way too high and detracts from the flavor and the body, which I think is a bit thin. hiphops (280), caldwell, New Jersey, USA Nov 8, 2006 huge thick brown head. black brew. aroma of licorice alcohol fruit roasted nut and chocolate. bitter chocolate taste up front than a hint of raspberry. feels thin and watery. taste more burnt than roasted all in all pretty decent but not in the upper tier Quevillon (1515), Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec, Canada Nov 1, 2006 Bouteille de 12 oz. par HogtownHarry. Pure noire, mince collet beige. Arome plaisant de café sucré, peu amère. Goût de café très torifié, un peu doux. kenb (1100), Oregon, USA Oct 20, 2006 Updated: Oct 21, 200612 oz bottle via Dickinsonbeer(thanks!)....Pours a midnight black with a small tan head. Nose has notes of licorice, anise, alcohol. Hmm, this does not really taste like a Stout. Very unique. Lots of fruity esters, berries, some bourbon...a little chocolate, the alcohol is so strong though it almost drowns the flavors out. Thin body for an Imp Stout.
