skortila (2875), Bunnik, Netherlands Sep 10, 2006 [2nd Low Countries RateBeer meeting] Aroma of roasted coffee malts with some raisins and black currant. Black coloured with a lasting, thin, brown head. Taste is sweet roasted coffee and black currant. Some carbonation. Nice Bailz316 (221), Mendham, New Jersey, USA Sep 8, 2006 Updated: Sep 22, 2006Pours a pitch bloack with small ring of tan head. Full-bodied, almost syrupy. Roasty. Aroma of coffee. Malts, somewhat acidic. Chewey. Drinkability improves as it warms. Finish is initially bitter, then sweet. grandetim311 (8), Tinton Falls, New Jersey, USA does not count Sep 6, 2006 Pouring this beer was almost shocking as it looked and moved like motor oil. Pitch black with a thick chocolately biege head. Complex roasted aroma. Deep roasted malt flavor with a bitter pleasant finish which seems to linger. Feels like the beer sits in your mouth. Braudog (3732), Dayton, Ohio, USA Aug 27, 2006 Bottle ... poured like dirty motor oil with a frothy, creamy tan head. Extreme aroma of whisky, smoke and roast malt. The drink is almost fruity ... smashed berries on burnt toast, like. Dry tart finish. Light body. Trooper11 (464), Suffolk, Virginia, USA Aug 25, 2006 Black as night with a khaki, thick foamy head. A very strong odor of alcohol and heavy notes of plums and raisins. Thick, malty, roasted flavor with a raisin aftertone. Not to shabby this one. Ends with a mild warming sensation. bubbleflubber (885), Collinsville, Virginia, USA Aug 22, 2006 Updated: Sep 10, 2006Beautiful pour, opaque black with a very latent tan head... quickly diminishing. The aromas are initially powerful, mostly effervescent roasted coffee beans, choco malts and syrupy dark fruit resinous juices. The flavors don’t remind me of an Imp Stout, rather a very good normal stout. The malts, which are roasted, smoky and pleasant, aren’t overly exert, and the bitterness doesn’t bring the cream contingency past a carbonated mouthfeel. There is a sour raisin-prune aftereffect, and slight smoked bitters.... Nothing truly imperial, per se, but a darn good brew nonetheless. GG (1609), NorCal, California, USA Aug 16, 2006 Thanks to moejuck for scoring this for me. Before I rate the beer, I’d have to mention the label is one of the most striking labels I’ve seen in awhile. Very cool! Here’s hoping the beer is as good. Aroma is roasted coffee beans, cream, some vanilla and burnt sugar. Appearance was jet black, minimal head. Mouthfeel was coating and slightly slick. Flavor were nice for a stout but I picked up nothing "imperial" about this. It was nicely balanced but I do like my impy stouts to be over the top and this just didn’t do it. Not to say this isn’t good, because it is very good..for a stout. Flavors were coffe, bitter chocolate, and some vanilla. It was missing the smoke and bitterness I love about imperials. Good beer, simply not a impy stout. mike mcneil (660), St Augustine, Florida, USA Aug 11, 2006 Pours from the bottle thick, black as night and oily. Produces a 1" thick tight, dense head with great durability. Some spotty lacing noted as glass is consumed. Pleasant, but somewhat restrained aromas of black roasted malts, baker’s cocoa, dark roasted coffee beans, chocolate and dried dark fruits. Mouthfeel is a bit oily, but full, thick and chewy. Flavors, as with the aroma, are enjoyable and well balanced, but slightly tame for a big RIS. Espresso, semi-sweet chocolate, molasses, prune, raisin and roasted malts are apparent. Starts out moderately sweet, but slips into a mild, crisp bitterness in the finish. Alcohol lends a very mild warmth. A well done RIS, but could use a bit more muscle.
