At the movies- Gone Girl. Rare to find a stout that I don’t like, but this one didn’t live up to rating. Too sweet with odd fruity notes being the prevalent flavor- raisin, plum, berries. Definite toasted malt, chocolate, espresso- everything I want in a stout- in there, but playing second fiddle. Right look/mouthfeel, carbonation for a stout, but taste really off balance for me.

330 ml bottle. Pitch black. Small light beige head. Soy sauce aroma. Oily and thick at first, but body is surprisingly light given the initial onslaught. Well balanced and very rich. Very nice imperial stout. A gentle one. Soft and enjoyable.

This is a damn fine way to take a hop break during tonight's beer tasting (I could keep the Double IPAs coming, but my wife needs a stout to mix things up.)

Poured from bottle into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours an almost pitch black color with a one finger of brown colored head. The head fades relatively quickly leaving a tiny bit of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt and coffee smell mixed with a rather strong aroma of a grainier and spent grain like smell. Mixed with these smells are some sweeter aromas of a caramel and chocolate with a little bit of a char and a hay like smell. The mix of spent grain (husky and musty) and hay really put a bad spin on the aroma, overall producing a rather unpleasant aroma.
Taste – The taste begins with a roasted malt taste with some darker chocolate flavors right from the start. Some sweetness is present upfront with a little bit of vanilla and caramel right from the start. The roasted flavors increase after the initial taste, with the sweeter flavors losing some ground and a good deal of a woody and coffee flavor coming to the tongue. Some flavors of a grainy nature as well as a little bit of an earthy and char taste come to the tongue more toward the end of the taste. With the mainly roasted body and light sweetness, one is left with a somewhat drier and grainy stout flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the average side. The slightly thicker body was decent for the darker flavors of the brew, although it did not do well for the more grainy flavors. Like the body, the carbonation being on the lower side, was good for the darker flavors, but not so good for the grainy tastes. Overall, just OK.
Overall – The flavors never really meld well in this one; with too much bitter graininess which does not compliment the roasted flavors all that well. Not an imperial I would frequent too often.

"i dug Heresy, the barreled version of this, but i gotta say, for an imperial stout, this came up a bit short. thinner and lighter in color than I’d like in the style...tasted and smelled like some kind of hybrid stout/old ale...not a lot of "russian imperial" characteristics if that makes sense. i got one more that I’m putting in the "community" section of the fridge."

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a pitch black with a one finger tan head with nice lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, bakers coco, espresso, licorice, and molasses. Taste is similar to the aroma with the addition of light smoke, leather, burnt caramel, and anise. Has a medium-full body with a semi creamy, semi bitter, long finish. Overall, a pretty tasty RIS that is pretty complex for only 8%.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours black with a brown head . Looks like a good stout indeed, Aroma of sweet malts, caramel, raisins, liquorice, ripe fruits and some notes of chocolate as well. Taste of roasted malts, ripe fruits, raisins, chocolate and a salty/sour note in the end. Pretty decent but a bit one-sided in the long run.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
33cl bottle. Pours pitch black with a lasting, brown head. Look good, that’s for sure. Aroma has roasted malts, salmiak licorice, coffee, chocolate, watery toasted malts and a bit of dried plums and other dried fruits. Taste has a bitter roast up front, followed by pretty sweet, chocolate and caramel notes. Lots of dried, dark fruits here as well. A little bit of soya or watery saltiness in the aftertaste. Probably from the aging. Pretty flavorfull for 8% ABV. Full body and medium carbonation.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Black, with a creamy coffee colored head. Aroma sweet, coffee, semi-bitter chocolate, heavy cream. Taste oddly light. Roast, some chocolate, but feels watery. Kind of impressive that an 8% beer can taste watery but there you have it. Palate definitely bares out the 8% though.
