I tried it cold, tried it warm, and then started cold and took my time with it. I have to say the flavor and body changes as it warms in the glass were enjoyable. It is a very dark color when poured. Creamy head, lasting lace, and a very sweet flavor. Almost caramel. A nice fruity aroma backed with lots of sugar. It is moderate in the finish. A great beer to take your time with and let your palate dance. CherokeeJarod (54), , USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 26, 2002 When poured into the glass it was dark brown to black in color. But when held to the light some gets through and you see some dark red peaking through. The head was creamy and slightly thick that was tan/beige in color. It lasted a good way to the bottom, but did not really produce a lace, which surprised me. The aroma was of roasted coffee, chocolate, malt, raisins and slight hops. The taste was a little sweet in the beginning. It had hints of malt, coffee, chocolate covered raisins and at the end some hops peaked through. The looks and taste of the beer were good, just not a thick as I would have liked for this type of beer. JonR888710 (999), Cochabamba, Bolivia

I’m sampling this beer at cellar temperature (approx. 65 F). This should be interesting. Pours in a thick manner. Big bubbles, though not much of a head. Body is extremely dark (brown and amber hues show when held up to a light). Smells of milk chocolate-malt and subtle fruit hops. Nice medium to full body feel though seems a little flat. Taste is semi-sweet chocolate, subtle grape (both confirm the aroma) and a nice, slightly spicy hop finish. This is a very subdued beer, especially at this temperature. Its velvety viscosity oily oozes over the tongue; it’s really quite pleasurable. On the whole, an excellent beer from an excellent brewery. biznizness (959), Mooresville, North Carolina, USA

Not really "blow you away" hearty like Old Rasp, but still pretty hearty. I think all imperial stouts should have to have "Old" in front of them. It just works so well. Great beer, try it. I would give this an amazing score however I have tried victory storm king stout and this is slightly not as good. There is a bitterness that doesnt exist w/ other stouts. Still very smooth and flavorful with and amazing aroma and palate. Definitely worth a try. Best beer from this brewery ive had as well. RateandPillage (417), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 15, 2005 Pours dark brownish black with a beige head. Aromas of coffee and chocolate. I tasted this right next to the Brooklyn Imperial and thought the Old Heathen was quite a bit on the thin side for this style. Still decent, but others in the style I prefer. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 25, 2005 Pours solid black obviously. Huge aroma of roast - coffee and chocolate. Head is large with a belligerent pour. It goes down easy, but the alcohol is detectable. Finishes dry. Chocolate is more dominant in the flavor, but this is hardly a chocolate stout. It leaves a nice lingering aftertaste.
