3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 durhambeer (2028) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - AUG 28, 2008
Bottle. I thought I had rated this a few weeks ago, but I guess not. Light coppery pour with very small head. Thick looking, and with a nose that reveals its alcohol. This one burns, so much so that the taste really gets lost. Malty, not very bready. Hard to taste the fruits in there b/c they’re so soaked in alcohol. Couldn’t get into this beer.

Bottle from 2006. Copper to orange pour with a thin off-white head. Caramel malts on the nose. Oily mouth-feel with flavors of malt with sweetness, dark dried fruit, light orange peel, plenty of spices. Slightly sweet with a slightly dry finish
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 JCB (2918) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - AUG 19, 2008
12oz from Carytown Wine and Beer, Richmond (RIP). A glowing russet pour, nearly still with only faint carbonation. Hugely boozy smell, with sweet caramel notes in there. The taste is immediately scorching, slick mouthfeel, aggressive as hell. Some spice in there, almost a bit of ginger perhaps. Sweet malts come through the further you get into the beer, but this doesn’t have the depth and complexity you need from this style.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 tmongoose (336) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - AUG 19, 2008
12oz bottle from jungle jims back in the spring. dark amber color. the head quickly disappears. aroma is strong almost fruity scent. the first taste was very strong and a warm burning sensation on the tongue that just lingered for awhile. i enjoyed that. i suppose if it was just a little cooler than room temp it would be very good but i like it this way.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 bhensonb (7143) - Woodland, California, USA - AUG 3, 2008
12 oz. bottle from Wine Specialist. Ripe apricot flesh color with a minimal head. Dark aroma suggesting Koningshoeven quad. Near full bodied with creamy carbonation. Flavor is Westvleteren but harsh and heated. Finish is sweet, dark and suggestive of Westvleteren 12. If they could smooth this out a bit, it would be a world beater. Just a fantastic ale.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 MuttyD (93) - Cambridge, USA - JUL 28, 2008
Orange and amber body with foamy white head. Dark fruits, yeasty and bread flavor. Not bad for an American quad, but lacks what other abts/quads have.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 sja14 (108) - Ohio, USA - JUL 27, 2008
A dark red/brown beer with a small off-white head. Smells of belgian fruitiness and alcohol. Definitely a full-bodied beer with alcohol and fruity flavor with a syruppy texture. This is not for the light-hearted, a very potent and heavy beer.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 blklab2007 (1354) - Connecticut, USA - JUL 25, 2008
UPDATED: AUG 15, 2008 bottle poured into a trappist glass has an orange amber color and a thin off white head that fell quickly and had virtually no lace. aroma has spices, banana yeast, candy sugar, dark dried fruit, and alcohol. mouth feel is medium with some thickness and low carbonation. flavor has thick malt with sweetness, dark dried fruit, light orange peel, plenty of spices, and mellow banana yeast that gets lost. alcohol is definitely noticeable and at times becomes boozy. finish has some bitterness and an odd flavor at the sides of the tongue. spices are a tad high for me and the booze just crushes the taste buds.
