This had been on my want list for a while. After having it, I’m not sure I wouldn’t mind another bottle but only after laying it down for a while. I have no idea the age of the one that was opened but it was pretty hot even for a Belgian quad. Still, if the alcohol had time to settle down this would be a nicely balanced beer.
Aroma / Appearance - A tart combination of caramel, toffee, cherries and honey greeted my nose. The wonderfully dense caramel brown body had a weak head which barely covered the top before dying down. It left no trace of having ever existed, swallowed by the rich liquid.
Flavor / Palate - The first thing to hit my overwhelmed senses was hot alcohol. I began to wonder if this was a quad or some form of colored spirits until the sensation finally subsided. Only then was I able to detect a sweet honey flavor mixed with caramel, toffee, cherries, grapefruit and very subtle malts and hops. If only the alcohol didn’t burn so much this would be far more enjoyable. Still, if you are out of antiseptic, try using this instead. It might be able to sterilize the wound and leave you smelling good.
padrefan98 (643), (San Diego) Santee, California, USA Oct 6, 2008 12 oz bottle shared by fordest at his home. A vert nice quad. Some sweet fruit like raisins. Easy to drink. stefanje (590), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Oct 5, 2008 12 oz bottle courtesy of fordest. pours a copper color with a small off-white head. The aroma is raisins and plums. The taste shows rock candy with big fruit note, more fruity than sweet, a very nice balance. The mouthfeel is full and malty. The finish is long with lingering ripe plums. Overall: not your typical Belgian quad, but very flavorful and enjoyable. thenick (583), North Bellmore, New York, USA Sep 30, 2008 Sample @ BBF 08, Boston. Pours a reddish-brown with a medium off-white head. Aroma is heavy raisins with detectable alcohol. Taste is raisin, malt, and a noticeable alcohol burn at the end. The flavors are not as bold or complex as you’d expect from the best in this style. Sephiroth (65), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA Sep 10, 2008 Pours with three quarter inch head, leaving some lace. Body is amber, with a slight tint of orange. Nose of rum, raisins, and sherry.
The taste is sweet at first, with some fruitiness. Then the rum like alcohol rears its head. This is a sweet, malty beer. The mouthfeel is smooth, and lightly carbonated. I have enjoyed this one more than the first time I had this. But I will not drink my other samples for several months. The sweetness reveals the youth of this beer.
