Hoptagon (56), Arlington, Virginia, USA Apr 9, 2008 12 oz. Bottle. Beer is black with a medium brown head. Raspberries are noticeable in the aroma as is a slight hint of alcohol. Some raspberry tartness present in the flavor along with a bit of chocolate malt and roasted barley. Body is a bit too thin for an imperial stout and it lacks the robust malt profile usually associated with this type of beer. Some bitterness in the finish and the beer feels a bit overly carbonated. Not bad, but the flavors don’t meld quite as well as I’d hoped.
MrChopin (137), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 2, 2008 Pours dark brown with a small beige head. A cohesive nose of raspberries, licorice, and roast. Carbonated, somewhat thin-sized body with flavors of roast and a medicinal raspberry, though the medicinal qualities have faded at room temp. An ok beer, but only slightly reminiscent of an imperial stout, and I prefer it when cough syrup makes me feel better. allfreej (276), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Aug 1, 2008 Dark brown pour, opaque, tan, lacy head. Nose was chocolate, raspberry, and smoke. The flavor was roasted malt, a faint hint of raspberry, and an underlying burnt impression. The finish was slightly astringent--the aftertatse was almost like that experienced with biting into a piece of unsweetened baker’s chocolate. DandyWolfFloyd (209), Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 27, 2008 Aroma was full of expresso, raspberry, dark roasted malts, and some alchohol. It’s appearance is black, with a thin collar of foam at the top. It’s flavor is decadent with roasted caramel, molasses, tobacco, raspberry, and coffee. It’s a hot with alchohol, and a lot of flavor, making it a nice sit-down beverage. It’s a fine Imp Stout. nearbeer (1150), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jul 21, 2008 12 oz. Opaque chocolate with a large foam that sizzles down to a lasting ring. Aroma is cocoa, caramel and a hint of tart fruit. Flavor is chocolate-covered raspberry with a finish that progresses through the following flavors: caramel, molasses, coffee, charred wood, tobacco, and a touch of zesty green herbs. Medium-heavy body is both sticky and watery at times and tingly with a bit of dryness on the end. Pretty nice, but seems to be missing that something to push it over the top, and I can’t identify it. Maybe just a touch more of everything - body, roastiness, raspberry, hops, caramel malt. Butters (298), Richmond, Virginia, USA Jul 19, 2008 Beautiful black pour with creamy brown head that fades. Nose of Chocolate covered raspberries with the slightest hint of alcohol heat. Flavor is predominantly chocolate. It comes off as a bit ’hot’ when it first hits the tongue, but alcohol is not evident otherwise. Medium body with fair carbonation. Aftertaste of roast and dark chocolate. Certainly gonna buy this again
