3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Slightly hazy burnt caramel colored beer with a distinct pinkish hue and a thin white head that is not much more than a surface film. Nose of sour raspberry, kandi sugar, and rose water. Flavor is quite a bit drier than the aroma with a puckering sourness overlaid with the essence of raspberry without any of the sweetness and a palate-coating wood resin that is hard to detect through the other bright flavors. I finished the entire glass in the time it took to write this which is a testament to how good this beer is.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750 ml bottle into tulip glass; 2015 vintage, bottled in 12/2015. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy ruby red/orange-ish color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of huge sour raspberry, cherry, cranberry, lemon, green apple, red wine, fruit skin, leather, hay, straw, musty funk, pepper, and toasted oak; with lighter notes of vanilla, brown/candi sugar, vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, raspberries, oak barrel, and light-moderate malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge sour raspberry, cherry, cranberry, lemon, green apple, red wine, fruit skin, leather, hay, straw, musty funk, pepper, and toasted oak; with lighter notes of vanilla, brown/candi sugar, vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Good amount of fruit/acidic sourness and yeast/tannic oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour raspberry, cherry, cranberry, lemon, green apple, red wine, fruit skin, leather, hay, straw, musty funk, pepper, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, raspberries, oak barrel, and light-moderate malt flavors; with nice malt/sour/spiciness balance, with no astringent flavors after the finish. Good dryness from acidity/spiciness as well. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, acidic/tannic, and lightly creamy/grainy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding fruited sour ale. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, raspberries, oak barrel, and light-moderate malt flavors; very smooth to sip on for the big ABV and acidity. This is nearly puckering on sourness, but has just enough malt character to keep it from getting astringent. A highly enjoyable offering.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a cloudy iced tea color with a thin off white head that dissipates quickly. Big bold tart raspberry aroma. Taste is very tart but not too sour to be unpleasant. Nice full mouth feel with lasting flavors. Hides the alcohol well. Light oaky flavor and a crisp fruity finish. Very enjoyable.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate berries (I’m getting more cherry than rapsberry) with some light oak, barely a hint of lemon, and alcohol. It pours a murky brownish-orange with a small pink head that settles to a very thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. The flavor starts with moderate-heavy raspberry that builds in tartness towards the finish and mixes with moderate lemon, light oak, and alcohol. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
DATE TASTED: December 24, 2015... GLASSWARE: Duvel snifter...OCCASION: Christmas Eve celebration done...time for a worthwhile ending to the night ...APPEARANCE: dark brown, almost iced tea in appearance, like muddied water... head swiftly descends to a thin white ring of bubbles... AROMA: powerful fragrance of flowers and funky yeasts... the Bretts paint a woody, oak-laden impression--big, bold and demanding...the second flavor is raspberry and puckering sourness...PALATE: vibrant, active at the teeth and bubbly throughout the mouth; a long, lingering, dry finish--a full-bodied sour that drinks with relative ease and without the hint of its alcoholic weight... TASTE: thick raspberry, a dessert in itself--the oaken casks create a woody, lightly spiced, slightly toasted back end that compliments the fruitiness; apple, berry, and malty...the sourness is intense and dominant...OVERALL: bigger and more demanding than the usual sours encountered during the year... a wonderful gift from Jeff that isn’t wasted on me...this is where Weyerbacher belongs, in a big beer with room to work.... intensely fruity and tart, with enough candied allure to bring upon the next sip....strong and sippable...
