Commercial Description:
Slam Dunkel was a small batch release in 2007. We had such an overwhelming response that we had to put it in the seasonal rotation. We also decided, as brewers, we couldn’t live without drinking this beer every year! This 7% Double Dunkelweizen is unfiltered and made with over 50% wheat malt along with pale, munich, and a touch of chocolate to give it the traditional color and flavor. Bitterness is subdued to allow the Weihenstephen yeast to shine through with those traditional notes of banana and clove. Available in June in bottles and draft. Recipe by Chris Wilson, Head Brewer.

Bottle. Pours a hazy dark red brown with a very small white to tan head. Aromas of plum are ample along with a hint of malt and a nice yeasty bread scent. Good thick body with a gentle carbonation heading into the finish. Finishes with a good amount of banana.

Pours a light tan, one-finger head that quickly vanishes leaving no lace. Murky brown/amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Slight wheat nose. Flavor is a yeasty wheat and some fruit, it finishes clean. $4.00 for a 22oz bottle from Tully’s Beer & Wine Wells, Me.

Bottled in a Weiz glass. Lots of head. Taste is off a bit, sounds crazy but there was almost something almost appley about it. It says they used Weihenstephen yeeast and I guess there is something familiar about it.

A seriously good brown ale, almost nutty. Flavors were balanced by slightly sweet. A plethora of flavors really. Pours light brown with a creamy head.

11/21/08 notes: bomber, part of tasting. Aroma is subtle, with notes of chocolate, bread and grain. Flavor was nutty, with plum, raisings and some faint wheat. Nevertheless, something about Slam Dunkel comes out too murky for me. Quality, overall, without being something I will go back to again.

The 22 oz. bottle pours a rich looking mohogany brown with a foamy tan head that fades rather briskly. Some lacing along the glass. The aroma has some sweetness mixed in with the wheat, yeast, banana, clove, and a tiny hint of chocolate. The flavor is a mixture of wheat, malt, some brown sugar sweetness, dried fruit, and a slight bitterness. Overall a nice flavor, but it is a little too sweet for my taste.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy dark brown with a moderate-large off-white head that lasted through to the end of the glass and left very nice webbed lace all the way through to the end as well. Pleasant aroma of malt with some alcohol notes and just a bit of brown sugar. Nice rich malty flavor with again just a bit of brown sugar. Very tasty.

My bottle (22oz) shared with HogTownHarry, garthicus, jerc & mabel. Pours a cloudy reddish-brown with a large frothy off-white head. Sugary sweet aroma along with chocolate, fruit (some definite banana there) and wheat. Flavour’s also sweet, a bit sugary, along with caramel malt, wheat, some alcohol, spices and fruit. Medium bodied. Pretty good stuff but I wouldn’t want a whole bomber of it, it’s a bit too sweet for that.
