Commercial Description:
Slam Dunkel was a small batch release in 2007. We had such an overwhelming response that we had to put it in the seasonal rotation. We also decided, as brewers, we couldn't live without drinking this beer every year! This 7% Double Dunkelweizen is unfiltered and made with over 50% wheat malt along with pale, munich, and a touch of chocolate to give it the traditional color and flavor. Bitterness is subdued to allow the Weihenstephen yeast to shine through with those traditional notes of banana and clove. Available in June in bottles and draft. Recipe by Chris Wilson, Head Brewer.

Beer smells malty, with some fruit and spice. An overriding sourness in the aroma, though. Pours a dark brown, with off-white, one finger head. Head settles down, but remains until the end, with minimal lacing. Beer is a dark, murky brown overall. In dimpled glass, however, a dark amber out toward edges. Flavor is nice, with a strong banana and malt flavor up front. Some clove is definitely discernible, too--it results in a slight numbness. When served cool or cold, there is a slight sour aftertaste. As beer warms to room temperature, it becomes much smoother. Palate is quite pleasant, with very slight carbonation enhancing the flavor. A nice dunkel weizen; pretty much everything they should be. While I’ve had better, this is a respectable beer.

A pretty good weizen bock. Pours a murky brown with a two finger creamy head. The aroma had some banana, clove, sweet, wheaty, sour. The flavor is similar, nice malty, banana, clove, kind of sweet.

22 oz bottle

With Weyerbacher being so hit or miss in the past I don’t know why I gave them a second chance. Perhaps I secretly know that they couldn’t unbalance a weizenbock that badly. In fact they’ve done quite a good job. This is not so over the top that it reeks of alcohol but it doesn’t go down mildly either. I may have to reconsider my position on them.

Aroma / Appearance - A huge two finger white head gushed from the bottle before mellowing into a deep brownish red body. If there was any carbonation it was well hidden by the darkness of the liquid within. The smell of fresh hot banana bread made me want to bake a loaf. Also present were chocolate chips, cherry pie filling and wheat. The fruitiness was almost enough to make me think it was aiming to be an imperial hefeweizen.

Flavor / Palate - Chewy banana bread fills the mouth from the start. Thick with chocolate chips it is very drinkable at 7%. With low expectations I was surprised to find a beer actually worth the $5.99 price sticker. I might give them another shot with the imperial stouts now.

Dark, reddish tinged, amber color with a decent beige/tan head. Aromas of banana and roasted caramel, with a possible hint of chocolate. Medium body with fizzy/creamy carbonation. Flavor is banana, dark malt, and a very light chocolate. Makes me think of chocolate covered frozen banana - except the temperature, and there’s not much chocolate here. Finish is good, and the banana turns a bit like the strings on bananas. Finally discovering some clove. Really tasty hefe.

Nice blue label. Big swirling pour starts out clearish brown then enter the swirling junk with chunks. If you know weyer, you know this will not be lacking in impact, and it doesn’t. Clean olfactory with hints of dragster fuel vapors. Strong on the tongue. Wheaty wheat wine beer impressions. Finsih is quite strongish and does not hide the alky well. Dizzy swishy senses after a while near end of session..... Somebody should have sent this to courtesy training school before it was released into the public. You’ll love it, quite powerful.
