Commercial Description:
Slam Dunkel was a small batch release in 2007. We had such an overwhelming response that we had to put it in the seasonal rotation. We also decided, as brewers, we couldn't live without drinking this beer every year! This 7% Double Dunkelweizen is unfiltered and made with over 50% wheat malt along with pale, munich, and a touch of chocolate to give it the traditional color and flavor. Bitterness is subdued to allow the Weihenstephen yeast to shine through with those traditional notes of banana and clove. Available in June in bottles and draft. Recipe by Chris Wilson, Head Brewer.

Bottle at lithy’s Septemberfest. Pours mahogany with beige head. The aroma is raisin, slight banana, clove, and some toast. The flavor is dusty caramel, rye, banana, and distant clove. Not too shabby.

I got rye bread in this. I always taste rye in dunkels. Seriously - it’s like my eyes see the word "dunkel" on a label and right away my brain tells my taste bud "hey guys, get ready - here comes some rye!". So, obviuosly I’m gonn go on and on about how much rye I tasted in this beer. Also pumpernickel. Actually a pretty nice beer. Sampled at lithy’s Septemberfest.

Pours a hazy brown with tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, spice, fruity hops. Taste is like an iced Starbucks chocolate concoction. Interesting.

on tap: thick is a thick, creamy bock that almost reminds me of a chocolate milkshake in the way that it drinks. Pours turbid brown almost gray. Tastes of chocolate and coffee and is very dry finish. Thin mouthfeel and light body. Me and my friends really liked this one.

Murky brown pour with a medium tan head. Intriguing aroma of roasted and smoked malt with some caramel. Flavor of roasted malt and caramel. The body is light and creamy with soft carbonation.

Bottle. Poured turbid deep ruby with obvious floating sediment and a medium sandy colored head. Redolent of banana bread, cinnamon, honey, orange zest, and slightly toasted nut. Flavor was of thick wheat bread dough, banana, spicy, slightly orange citrus, mellow honey and caramel, slightly rooty, banana peel, and a bitter finish. Palate was full bodied and the carbonation came through just right. The flavor is not really what one expects of a wheat beer, although it is not entirely foreign either, and it is really enjoyable though I would say its definitely a cold autumn beer.
