Commercial Description:
Slam Dunkel was a small batch release in 2007. We had such an overwhelming response that we had to put it in the seasonal rotation. We also decided, as brewers, we couldn’t live without drinking this beer every year! This 7% Double Dunkelweizen is unfiltered and made with over 50% wheat malt along with pale, munich, and a touch of chocolate to give it the traditional color and flavor. Bitterness is subdued to allow the Weihenstephen yeast to shine through with those traditional notes of banana and clove. Available in June in bottles and draft. Recipe by Chris Wilson, Head Brewer.

Pours a cloudy brown with adecent tan head. Pleasant sour, yeasty and dark chocolate aroma. Tangy grapefruit and bitter baker’s chocolate taste along with some yeast flavor. Very good.

(22 oz. bottle from Tully’s) Pours cloudy brownish amber with a huge cocoa tan head in my weizen glass. Aroma of brown sugar, wheat malt, caramel, light citrus and banana. Mouthfeel has a decent bit of heft and wheaty smoothness, maybe just a tad thinner than normal for style. Lots of heavy broken rings and patches of lacing. Flavor pretty much carries all the elements of the aroma but somewhat subdued. Brown sugar, wheat malt, caramel, chocolate, light citrus and touch of banana. As it warms the flavor becomes better and more assertive and there is a nice bit of spiciness. Just a bit of alcohol presence. It’s a pretty good beer but maybe a little less refined than something like Ayinger.

Sampled on draft at D’s in Monroeville PA this beer poured a murky dark brown color with a medium sized khaki head. The aroma was tangy citrus and banana. The flavor was a very nice mix of bitter and tangy malts, roasty malts, light citrus, clove and banana. Very malty base to this beer. The finish was long with notes of citrus and clove. Exceptional!

Bottle from Belmont Party. Poured cloudy brown color with a large frothy off-white head that was lasting with excellent lacing. Moderate yeasty, clove, and wheat aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture. Moderate sweet malty flavor with a smooth sweet finish of an average duration. Solid drinkable beer.

Bomber courtesy of GMCC2181. Pours a murky caramel color with one finger fizzy beige head and spotty lacing. Nose is yeast, spice and bananas. Taste is caramel, cloves and yeast with a banana finish. Medium, semi- creamy bubbly mouth feel. Interesting brew – thanks G-miny Cricket for this one!

A friend of mine described this as being twenty times heavier than the traditional dunkel, so I was looking forward to being rewarded. As I poured the dark and frothy ale into my wide glass, I inhaled the great aromas. It looked good in my glass and the first taste revealed a slightly sour and bitter outside to a great dark wheat taste. I could imagine this being served with a fat ham and swiss heros at tailgate parties during this Fall’s season of football.

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a large light tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of clove wheat, and yeast. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness. Very good.

A nice dunkelweizen. With a little more carbonation this would have been in the 4s. Aroma was nice. Banana with a hint of chocolate and yeast. Pour was perfect. A swirling multicolored brown that looks like a sunset with a 2 finger off white head. Taste was nice and full. Strong clove, banana and spice with a wheat/yeasty tang in the aftertaste that leaves a bitterness behind. Little to no carbonation which is a crime. This beer would be outstanding with it.
