Oakes (8080), gone rambling, Vietnam Aug 18, 2008 Dark muddy brown with a big head. Chocolatey malt aroma with some dark fruits (grape, apple, raisin) and light bubblegum phenols. Very soft body, a little oily, with low carbonation. Slightly toasted with dark fruit. Solid, functional dessert beer and rendition of the Aventinus concept. fiulijn (7150), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Jan 12, 2009 Draught at Brickseller, Washington DC Cloudy dark brown color, big head. The smell reminds me sewage water. It has a solid body, but again it seems that a quite good beer (sweetness, caramel, wheat...) Has been brewed with dirty water; but it’s a pity because the beer should not be bad. Difficult. argo0 (6861), Washington DC, USA Aug 6, 2008 (22oz bottle) Large off-white head atop murky brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, banana, cantaloupe, some wheat, light clove. Taste is moderately sweet, chocolate, banana, light caramel, clove. Soft medium body, alcohol shows through a little bit. Rastacouere (5552), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Sep 7, 2008 Objectively speaking:
I like:
Original aroma with an hard to decipher spiciness reminiscent of anise or cloves. Cakey, fruity, desserty and rather unique example.
I dislike:
Timid wheat character provides no refreshment at all. Staying away from any roastiness, where some balance against the strong sweetness might have been reached. Unpleasant apple undertones to the nose. Although the carbonation is vigorous and large-bubbled, the mouthfeel feels a bit syrupy. Felt larger than 7%. hopdog (5535), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 14, 2008 Poured a medium and cloudy brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of toast, bready, caramel, spices, and a little fruity. Tastes of chocolate, fruity (bananas), and spices. Alcohol well hidden. hopscotch (5446), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Jul 1, 2008 Bottle... Murky prune-colored ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Small, tight retention. Smells of spiced pears and chocolate-dipped bananas. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Sweet, fruity, malty. Nice bitterness to balance things out. Fruity, chocolaty, lightly sweet finish. Thanks to johnykat for providing this beer! bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA May 5, 2009 (22oz bottle) Pours a cloudy brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of nuts, toasted grain, rye, and raisins. Flavor of toasted grain, rye, caramel malt, banana, and clove.
