3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Tasted on 10/13/13 from a corked and caged 750mL bottle sent to me as an extra in a trade, this one was a bit of a gusher. Pours nearly black with a very thick, tan head that slowly recedes to thin lace. The nose is primarily darkly roasted malt with sour and vinous fruits underlying, and just a touch of brett funk. The flavor is a bit more focused on the sour, vinous, and oak notes, but the roasted dark chocolate and coffee end up dominating in the end. The body is fairly light with vary lively, almost sparkling carbonation and a long darkly roasted and oaky vinous finish.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml bottle thanks to my friend Josh. Pours a black with a grey head of foam. The aroma is that dry, funky, near floral sour from the brett. I get some woody notes out of this as well. Taste is dry sourness. Earthy and funky. Nice, crisp, fizzy mouthfeel, nearly what you would expect from a fountain soda, but a little thicker than most sodas Iíve come across.

4.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
THOUGHTS: A wonderfully different sour ale. Most sours Iíve tried take a beer and turn it sour, but this one just adds a sour layer and keeps its stout like flavors. Very complex. Itís like two beers in one instead of just one transformed beer. Very easy to drink. The body was a little thin, but that just made it easier to drink. The roasted malt showed up even more when paired with some great Blue Stilton cheese.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a very dark brown that was basically opaque black in the glass with a huge, creamy, tan head that mostly, but very slowly, diminished and left good lacing. The aroma contained light roasted malt; ever so slightly chocolate; some wood; mostly sour fruit; slight sweet fruit; and hints of vinegar. The flavor had slightly sweet fruit, then mostly sour fruit, then roasted malt and a little chocolate and then some very tart fruit and wood. The light to medium body was dry with tingly but sort of soft carbonation and a dry and moderately astringent finish.
