Sour Black, ~5% ABV, is a Black Ale aged in Wine Barrels. These barrels are the same used Pinot Noir barrels which produced Rapture. Brettanomyces lambicus was added to the barrels adding a nice acidity. It’s fruity and tart with just enough roasted character; a truly delightful dark ale.

GABF, 2012, Friday Evening. I generally don’t care very much for Weyerbacher. This sour is ok, it doesn’t offer much other than the sourness and yeast, but it is satisfying for delivering a sour fix.

Sampled on 10/12/2012 at GABF. This wild/sour ale pours a dark black color from a 750ml bottle. Medium sized beige foamy head. The aroma is fruity, chocolate and tart. A medium bodied wild/sour ale. The malts are roasty and sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Lively carbonation. Fairly solid tartness. Nice balance between the tart and sweet. A touch of wood. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly tart.

(750ml bottle) cloudy dark brown, lasting thick fine tan bubbles. Nose is vinous, cherry, earth, Brett, umami, seltzer, light chocolate. Taste of grapes, wine, light roast, cherry, nice natural carbonation and vinous linger.

(750ml bottle) Pours an opaque black body with a medium beige head. Aroma of vinous, dark fruit, leather, roasted malt, earth, herbs, and oak. Flavor of roasted malt, brett, caramel, balsamic, and minerals.

Black pour with a khaki head. Smells a bit like licorice with some balsamic vinegar sourness, oak, chalk, and wine. A fair amount of roast, some raisin, char, and burnt sugar. Strange flavor. Somewhat sweet with burnt sugar, licorice, and molasses sweetness. Balsamic vinegar sourness, a bit of wood, somewhat chalky, and a mild wine flavor. Some dark fruit notes of raisin, dates, and grape. The finish is very dry.

Bottle from Capones via Dmac. Pours out black with a tan head....this looks like a stout, but definitely does not smell like one. Nose is of tart dried fruits, funk, oak, vinegar, light roast and some vinegar notes. Taste is complex, lots of dried dark fruit skins, sour cherry, light roast, oak, vinegar, light wine-like tannins. Solid

The ChrisO small midweek tasting. Opaque dark brown beer. Light crisp palate. Barrel aged bourbon sweetness contrasts with a sour edge. A little brett. Crisp finish. All right.

Had this at the 2012 Great American Beer Fest in Denver, Colorado. Has some nice cherry/tobacco like scents and taste, very interesting.

750 ml cork and caged bottle from Capones. This one poured way thicker and darker then I was expecting, looks like a solid porter with a solid dark black body and a smaller to average sized foamy light beige head. Aroma is sour overall with some vinegar notes but lots of dark malts coming through in thr form of chalk, dusty chocolate, waxy tootsie roll wrappers, wet barrel, dry nut shells and some lightly buttered brown toast. Milkshake thick body, incredibly thick for a sour, average to softer carboantion and only a light sourness, but the thickness is a welcome difference to traditional sours. Flavor is sour, vinegar, sour chocolate, dark sour fruit skins, wet burnt toast some slight vinous notes. This one gets better and better as it warms (or as I get drunker and drunker).
