nuplastikk (577), Maryland, USA Aug 25, 2008 Updated: Aug 26, 2008 22oz bottle. Pitch black color with not too much head to speak of. Aroma of chocolate spirits, full of alcoholic sweetness.. Really on the fringes of beer tastes, some imperial chocolate roastiness is certainly still there, but this one is fast approaching liqueur. Some faint hoppiness dares to stand up to the malt backbone and is demolished in a sugary sweet aftertaste. I really enjoyed the previous anniversary beers, but this one is a little over the top.
JFGrind (1239), Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 7, 2009 Cellared a bottle at home for three months before sampling. Sharp menthol aroma, pitch black strong bodied Imperial Stout. Flavors of Dark roasted, chocolate, & coffee malts, blended with fruit and warming alcohol. Belgium, and West Coast styles come together in Easton, who would of thunk? Very enjoyable sipper beer, and a slam dunk of an anniversary beer for Weyerbacher. nearbeer (1484), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jan 7, 2009 Bomber. Lasting disc of cream leaves some spotty lace. Nose is alcohol, tobacco, dark fruit, chocolate, light cherry and oak. Flavor is the same, with maybe some oats in the aftertaste. Both are a little heavy on the alcohol and tobacco for me. Medium-heavy, creamy smooth body is thinned by the alcohol. Has some burn and chest warming. SamGamgee (706), La Selva Beach, California, USA Jan 5, 2009 Draught at Birreria Paradiso. Black with a dark tan head of modest size, but good tenacity considering the alcohol content in this. Sweet, milk-chocolate, and alcoholic fruit aroma. A bit of hotness from the alcohol shows in the flavor, but it works with a modest roastiness and high fruitiness to create a liqueur-like flavor that melds pretty nicely. It does show some belgian inspiration in that it combines more fruity esters with less bitter roast than more american styled stouts. A big body gets rescued from stickiness by plenty of drying alcohol and higher carbonation than you might expect. I was feeling a bit of apprehension due to the big size of this but it turned out to be a nice sipper (the small snifter glass didn’t hurt either). Crosling (1730), Loveland, Colorado, USA Jan 3, 2009 Dark brown pour. Inky black body with a very light tan, thinnish head. Strongly aromatic nose smells of alcohol, a variety of very nicely amplified deep dark fruits and a very light amount of dark malts. Flavor is very nice with some complex dark Belgian fruits. Excellent aging potential, but very hot right now and could use more dark malt elements. Headbanger (1059), Aurora, Illinois, USA Jan 2, 2009 22oz bottle 9/18/08 (Knighly Spirits)-Pours a cloudy black with a small ring for a head. It has an aroma of malt, caramel, and alcohol. The flavor is very malty, alcohol, fruity, and coffee. This medium bodied brew is well balanced and not bad.
