BeerGestapo (351), Windsor, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 13, 2008 (USA) Had on tap at Capone’s, Pours black with sm tan head. The aroma is of molasses and licorice and the taste is of chocolate, raisins and coffee. The 13.4 % is well hidden and quite yummy. If you get a chance please try this brew !!!
Bockyhorsey (2032), Mesa, Arizona, USA Oct 8, 2008 Bomber courtesy of eaglefan538. Alcohol hits the nose and you say man wow. Also some good chcolate aromas as well. Black beauty with dark tan head. Good chcoolate and roasted oats flavor but the alacohol rears it head all the way though bottle. Some creamy milk texture as it warms. Good roasted chocolate aftertaste. Good except alcohol is little much. Thanks Brian. awaisanen (1161), Irvine, California, USA Oct 8, 2008 From a 12oz Bottle. Courtesy of CharlesDarwin. Thanks, Tom! Pours an oily black color with a thin head of fizzy brown. Aromas of prune and molasses peak out from behind a curtain of varnish-like alcohols. As it warms, the alcohol fades some, revealing a strange burned coconut smell and some conflicting Belgian pear esters. Weird. Full bodied, lightly carbonated mouthfeel with an oily texture. Strange carbonation feeling, the bubbles are large and scrubbing for such a big beer. Flavors of chocolate, molasses, and roast overwhelm the palate immediately. The Belgian yeast character is pronounced, bringing out a wave of peppery phenols. Black licorice and coffee flavors linger in the finish with some warming alcohol. This beer tastes weird and conflicted, but it’s not really bad per se. There’s almost a brett like, chardonnay grape quality to it, but it’s a bit difficult to distinguish from behind the soy and tobacco residue left lingering on the tongue. Hmm. goldtwins (3740), Nesconset, New York, USA Oct 4, 2008 Poured black with a medium sized beige head. Sweet roasted malt. Light fruit and dark chocolate. Light dark fruit and dark chocolate flavor. Soft silky body. Medium body and warming. CharlesDarwin (1409), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 2, 2008 12oz Bottle. Noses somewhat fusel-like in strong alcohol, macerated raisins, and crisp roast. Somewhat quiet, but loaded with some Belgian character. Pours pitch, oil black, with heavy viscosity and a rim in dark tan. Flavor is fucking intense. This is a little hard to work through. It has that malt magnamity that overwhelms everything else. Brown and roasted malts to the point of near soy and umami. Surprisingly the alcohol and roast characters fight off the impending sweetness and a fresh blast of mint, crisp cool hop character blends in as well. There’s some standard Weyerbacher bubblegum, but I’m not finding this so bad. It may age well. Lots of dark fruit, intense brown malt roast and alcohol. Sharp, biting alcohol. Lots of heat. JoeMcPhee (3807), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Oct 1, 2008 Very deep dark brown beer. Aroma is very rich with a strong sweet chewy figgy fruitiness. Rummy/brown sugar maltiness with a fairly spicy yeasty flavour as well. Roasty and lightly charry with a nice licorice character. There is a bit of peppery alcoholic aroma as well but it’s mostly subdued. Flavour shows nice integration of dark malts, Belgian yeasty spice and a lingering roastiness. There is a nice sweet figgy/plummy date sweetness. Spicy and estery and also lightly smoky and phenolic. As it warms a nice espresso-like character comes to the fore along with the date and licorice. This is one of the better of these anniversary brews.
