2008ís anniversary ale - a hyper, Belgian inspired Imperial Stout clocking in at 13.6% abv, but incredibly balanced, smooth, and tasty.

Bottle shared courtesy of the notorious ajm. Pours a thin coffee color with a trim tan head. Smells and tastes of toasted malt, bakers cocoa, and caramel. Seems very tame for a stout and really doesnít represent a 13% ABV.

Tasted on 8/1/12 from a capped 22oz bottle at City House for Curtisí birthday. Pours syrupy thick dark brown with an average brown head that slowly recedes to average lace. The nose is very hot with some vanilla, dusty dark chocolate, dried date and fig, along with burnt dark chocolate and molasses. The flavor is all about the sweet date, fig, and molasses, very hot, vanilla, and added burnt coffee bitterness. The body is massively full with light carbonation and a long dried fruit, molasses, and bitter, dusty dark chocolate finish.

So itís St. Patrickís Day, Iíve no desire to go where so many have made asses of themselves with green beer. How about drinking a nice stout at home? A nice BIG stout. From my 2009 trade with MrBunn. Black, viscous pour. Kicks up just a few dark brown bubbles, but only for a little while. Smell is deeply syrupy, with no roastiness to it, just smooth alcohol. Taste alternates between a really thick Guinness, with stronger sourness, and maybe a bit of cherry cough syrup. Kind of need to remember that they were shooting for a Belgian style stout, whatever you want to call it, and expect some more sour fruitiness. A few more sips and I can aver that, no, itís not cough syrup, but just a strong, warming note of kirsch involved. But this is very strong, and thereís somehow a bit of "cork" in it, even though it had a metal crown. Bit still creamy, with some sherry in the finish, and just a slight milk chocolate roast.

This beer sure has grown up since I last had it (early 2011). Pours black with a solid sheet of tan foam. Smell is pretty fucking acceptable. Dark molasses, prune, brown sugar, oats, chocolate, globs of caramel and nougat. When I dome this beer I know Iím in trouble - itís really tasty. I was scared the belgian yeast would murder the fucking hips out of the foundation, but this beer really just plays along with just a hint of vinous character, but then the rest is sweetened, dark, oral face sex. Medium on full bodied with low carb and a dry finish. I really enjoyed this one. Time did a good thing here. Original review: 3/3.5/3.5/3.5/4 Thanks to yourefragile for this extra. Cheers! A: Pours a dark coffee brown with only a sheet of mocha foam which dissipates very quickly. Surface has several whirls of foam left. No lacing to speak of. S: graham, nougat, malts, black cherries, cola, caramel, hint of molasses. Fine whisps of cocoa. Slight alcohol scent at the back. Overall quite pleasant. Based on smell alone, could use another year in the cellar. T: Roasty plums, figs, coffee, licorice, black malts. nearly port-like profile. Again, some grahams, sweet molasses. Sweet and alcoholic. Black cherries in here once again too (particularly on the finish). M: Viscous, low carbonation. Slicks my tongue and makes the roof of the mouth a bit slippery as well. D: The beer is very nice, wouldnít advise drinking more than one in a sitting. Think the beer could use another year in the cellar before drinking. Serving type: bottle 11-01-2012

Clear dark black brown colour with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is light heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, alcohol, dark chocolate, light port - tawny. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, chocolate, dark roasted, alcohol. port - tawny. Body is medium, texture is oily - creamy, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20130802]

650 mL bottle. 2008 vintage.. Stout colour with no head. Nose has prunes and other dried fruit, soy sauce, a little coffee. Big. Molasses, soy sauce, booze, port, maraschino cherries. Affected by age, but it has held up pretty well. Still a big beer.

Bottle:   Black, thin brownish frothy head, sparce lacing.   Rich roasted malt nose, strong pale fruit, very strong coffee and assertive soy.   Given the few years I sat on this, it certainly has mellowed out, but it has also a fairly assertive roasted malt character.   Lots of chocolate, roasted malts, lactose, and prune like flavors up front.   Hops on the soft side, its warming and certainly gives off some heat as it goes down.   Seems like this could have been a bruiser a few years ago.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Strong graham cracker, prune, and bittersweet chocolate notes remain.   Glad I waited on this one as its seems like a hot Imperial Stout that has smoothed out, a lot.

Bottle @ home....It pours clear dark brown with a small tan head....The aroma is roasted malt, licorice, vinous... It got this vinous aroma .... The flavor is dark fruits as raisins, alcohol, licorice, nice vinous........ Warming alcoholic felling finish.....
