Commercial Description:
This year's unique brew is a rye barleywine. It's brewed with 50% rye malt, 50% pale malt, and hopped with Magnum hops. This BEER will gain even more character if aged properly.

Bomber. Clear copper with a beige head. Rye and apricot nose, some peachiness as well. Mild citrus. Odd sweet flavors, fruity, pineappe and apricot, some rye and lemon, something plastic-like. Strange and actually kinda unpleasant. Meh. Two years did not do this any favors, I guess.

Thanks to jdubfl for the share. Pours a clear gold with a white head. Nose is bubble gum, strawberry, light malt, and white refined sugar. Flavor is same with overwhelming sweetness. Lots of sugar, malt, and syrupiness. Light to medium body and lingering sweetness into the finish.

Bottle:   Orangish honey in color, slightly hazy, moderate to large off-white head, foamy, nice lacing.   Syrupy sweet malt nose.   I get the feeling this is going to be just a sugar bomb.   A-yup, plain ole malt sweetness on the tongue.   A little hard to choke down, very sweet and sticky without anything else to balance it out.   Sugary sweetness to the max.   Ugh... hard to finish.   I will say that for a high ABV beer its not that hot.   The sweetness is really heavy tho, making this difficult to complete.   Oh lordy, just too sweet.   Overly simple is the downfall of this one.   Its just a damned sugary sweet malt bomb.   Super sticky all over the place.   Body and mouthfeel is... TOO STICKy!   I think I will put the rest of this out.   Not a bad beer, just not a good example of a Barley Wine.   This might be okay in doses of 3 or 4 ounces, but to try and finish a 22oz by yourself... forget it.   Thanks to Ken for the bottle!

Bottle courtesy of jdubfl. Pours a generally clear golden color with thin tan head. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of honey, caramel, rye, booze, wheat, some hints of prunes. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of rye, booze, caramel, toffee, ripe dark fruit. Medium body with a malty, boozy finish.

Bright orange in color with a white rim head. Had kind of syrupy pour. Aroma of honey, fruity, and tons of alcohol. Flavor was also dominated by alcohol. The whole experience reminded me of gasoline fumes. Not the best offering from Weyerbacher.

pours a goldish orange with almost no head, basically a white line around the top of the brew. smells lightly of fruits, with some grains and yeast and some very strong malts and of course overpowering of alcohol. tastes very smooth, malty but yet fruity (plum, apples, lemons) with a swallow that is easy and barely tastes of alcohol. good and powerful stuff.

I think this brew is finally worth reviewing and it only took 2 years. My bottle poured into a tulip glass produced a good finger worth of white head, which left a light lace across the glass. The color of the brew was a cross of gold to amber with a good amount of carbonation coming from the bottom of the glass. Aromas of honey, rye, sweet caramel and a light alcohol whiff come of this brew. The flavor is nice and balanced not to sweet, there is some caramel and honey up front. along with some spiciness from the rye and a light bitter from the hops in the end. Lets not forget why I aged this one the alcohol is still present in the taste but much more bearable now. I still think this could go a couple more years, if I find another bottle I will try it. The mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. This brew is a good sipper one glass is enough. In other words split the bottle or pay the price of a healthy buzz. This is a big beer, make no bones about it. The brew is getting much better than it was fresh in my opinion and can only get better I think with some more age.

Just had this so never had it fresh but I bet it was much different when it was released. Whatever it was, it is a satisfying drink now. The hops are very muted and toned down at this point and the alcohol has melded in to form a full bodied, viscous sort of beer. Some prune and plum flavors and an intense sweetness that is bordering on overpowering but holds itself back to be a perfect complement to the rye and other malts working here. A bit syrupy but to be expected with an aged, high alcohol BW. This was stored in cellar to bellow cellar temps so I would be curious to know what other people think of it now. This was a 22. Nothing exciting but definitely not a drain pour.
