k4df4l (135), DTown, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 1, 2008 Bottle - pours a clear deep gold with almost zero foam. Aroma is spicy, somewhat phenolic. Flavor while chilled is reminiscent of a golden strong ale with the sweet and spicy flavors up front then a light tang and faint esters. When the glass warms, the individual malt characteristics become more assertive. The mouthfeel is rather thick and somewhat chewy due to the lack of carbonation. Light alcohol presence in the finish but nothing to indicate the 10.2%.
alexsdad06 (605), Ohio, USA Aug 4, 2008 22 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy light amber color with the smallest off white head. The aroma shows light fruits, spices, rye, alcohol and some caramel malt. I was definetly interested after the nose and once the liquid made it to my mouth things were still ok. Once I swallowed the first taste only bad things happened. This was a mess: I don’t know if the rye didn’t work with everything else or if I had a bad bottle. NaturalIce (76), South Orange, New Jersey, USA Aug 3, 2008 22oz bottle - pours out nice dark amber with a creamy white head that seems to last. I agree with Kingpin on the aroma minus the brown sugar. Looking forward to see the brewery. KingpinIPA (816), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jul 18, 2008 Golden color. Smell of yeast, lemons, spice, hops, malt, brown sugar and alcohol. Taste of yeast, lemons, spice, hops, malt, brown sugar and alcohol. I would have to agree with brewblackhole on this one. This smelled like a Belgian style beer. hopdog (4482), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 13, 2008 12oz bottle. Poured a medium and clear golden color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of seom rye breadiness, caramel, and fruity. Tastes of bread, rye, fruity, grains, and some dark fruits (cherries). Some alcohol burn in the finish. brewblackhole (1222), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Jul 13, 2008 Aroma comes through as sweet and sugary, with some apple like fruitness, this smells like its going to be a Belgian style instead of an American Barleywine. big thick sugary flavor with apple sucker overtones, don’t really get the rye anywhere, alcohol not offensive, again all very Belgian in character. . Not bad, however a bit muddled, thanks Kingpin
