COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It is a Belgian-style Pale Ale with an American twist. It is brewed with pale, caramel, and wheat malts, and hopped with centennial and Cascade hops to give it a distinctly American character. The medium bodied beer has a crisp palate and moderate bitterness coupled with the fruity esters from the abbey yeast strain. It is bottle and keg conditioned so expect a tall fluffy head and a small amount of sediment. Recipe by brewer, Jeff Musselman.

Tap at Capones. Pours a light copper with a white lasting head. Aroma is orange zest, sweet, phenolic, light bubblegum, fruity and floral hops and a big sweet honey like maltiness. Flavor is hoppy, a bit soapy, phenolic, orange zest, slight cleanser, but overall a touch too sweet, and a bit juicy and fruity with not enough true belgian character. Meh.

On tap at weyerbacher riserva release party. Pours a nice clean looking golden color with a good whtie head, nice retention andsome good lace. Aroma is grassy, herbal, a bit vegetal, but otherwise nice continental saaz like hops, with a phenolic belgian yeast strain similar to a de konink character- light yeasty doughiness. Flavor is phenolic, lightly soapy, yeastyniess, but not messy, actually cleaned up a bit as I kept drinking more- light nice pale crackery malts, and a nice herbal and spicy hop bitterness. Overall, a nice easy drinking beer. Wow- they can actually make a decent belgian beer afterall.

Tap at CAH. Pours a hazy amber with golden notes and a medium bubbly/creamy off white head that left spotty lacing. Aroma of Belgian spicy yeast esters, citrus and piney American hops, also getting some floral and orange hop aroma, herbal and a touch of caramel. Flavor of a nice complex fruity/spicy Belgian yeast esters, mixed citrus and piney hop presence, moderate hop bitterness, grapefruit, light earthy and herbal flavor, some caramel malt, but in general rather dry. Flavor is pretty spot on. I really enjoy the hoppy Belgian ales. Would have liked to see a bit more hop aroma. Still very solid, just could be taken up a notch.

Re-rated from a bottle. Also had it on draft at Weyerbacher. Overall...way better than the firkin I had originally. Pours a hazy golden orange with a large foamy/bubbly off white head that left some lacing. Aroma of fresh citrus, some banana, bready and some Belgian yeast esters. Flavor of a load of citrus, orange really coming through, fresh hops, light pine, some banana, Belgian yeast esters, light spicy notes and yeast. Not sure if they used any American hops in this but I’m sure getting it in the taste and even the aroma a bit. Well done and way better on tap/out of the bottles. I think the firkin was the spent yeast from this beer!

Poured from a growler thanks to egajdzis that was filled at the Drafting Room from a firkin. Pours a milky orange...heck this thing looked just like a yeast starter with a small bubbly white head that went away to nothing quickly. Aroma of sulfur, banana, citrus notes, clove, Belgian yeast, bready notes and some tropical fruits. Flavor of banana, clove, Belgian yeast esters, lost of yeast, light tropical fruits and light sulfur in flavor also.

12oz. Pour is copper with a small white head. Aromas of citrus fruit, yeast, slight spice, and plastic. Flavor is full of fruit, floral hops, yeast, and a slightly dry finish. This reminds me of Wild Devil alot.

Pours out a mostly clear amber color with a moderate fluffy off white head. Aroma is of bread, yeast, spice and slight citrus hops. Taste is bready malts, yeast, spice, slight mild fruit flavors and a little crisp hop bitterness to round it out. An interesting brew with some positives from all styles it is trying to capture, overall a bit above average.

Sample at Weyerbacher. Poured out a cloudy golden color with a small head, slight lacing. Aroma of citrus fruits and some banana. Taste is complex and well balanced, banana, yeast, citrus and some resiny hop in there as well. Wish I could have picked up a few bottles of this, but I tapped out most of the funds on the Riserva.

Fresh bottle from SL. The pour was a golden-straw type color, decent sized head in a glass that normally doesn’t promote such a thing (maybe that’s cuz my 3yr old helped pour this one?). The aroma was dry yeast and some bread and citrus notes. The flavor followed, bready yeast, citrus, floral notes, fruity aspects, but a metallic aftertaste to each sip (despite it not being an oxidized flavor). The acidity in the finish was also a turn off. Not one of my better-remembered experiences from a style that I’m totally down with!

A nice but average Belgian ale. Aroma was good. Mostly yeast, light fruit and spices. Pour was a cloudy orange (not very pale), with a one finger off white pillowy head. Taste was good. There was apricot and other light fruits in the front, with a thin sweet aftertaste. The yeastiness provides a little bite and texture and some tiny particles, but it’s a little too thin to be great. Nice carbonation.

A very average American attempt at a Belgian beer. Aroma and taste were both....in a word...soapy. Pour was a nice dark orange with a 3 finger tan head. Aroma was soap and light fruit. Taste was light fruit and mostly handsoap. Blah.

Bottle. Pours gold/orange, with a white head. Aroma is yeast, spices, and fruit. Flavor is spices and yeast,. Ends dry and a little bitter. This is OK, but a little disappointing.

Druaght at Max’s Baltimore: Aroma of Belgian yeast, hops, and Sprite. Poured orange/amber in color with a small, white head that lasted throughout. Hazy. Slightly sparkling. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes of yeast, light caramel, slight spices, malts, slight metal, slight medicine, and some fruit. Medium body. Muted, sticky, dry texture. Soft to average carbonation. Sweet, yeasty finish is sticky and dry.

Firkin at TDR EX: Aroma was slightly sour. Smells of citrus, yeast, banana and a hint of piney hops. Poured a turbid brown color with a small white head. Opaque. Tiny lacing. Flavor of yeast, tropical fruits (pineapple?), toasted malts, alcohol, citrus, and some bitter piney hops. Medium body. Chewy texture. Soft carbonation. Dry yeast and sour tropical fruit finish.

One of the descriptions I read about this beer was that it was a Belgain pale ale. I have to agree more with our classification of this as a sour ale. The beer poured a dark golden color with a bright white head that laced nicely around the glass. The aroma was extremely fruity, with notes of grapes and cherries, with a touch of caramel and grass thrown in. But the body was a little too sour and fruity for my liking. Obvsiously this beer featured a semi-sour flavor and aftertaste. It just wasn’t my speed of beers to enjoy. But if you’re in that mood or enjoy a more sour and tart flavored type of beer, more power to ya.
