Commercial Description:
At Weyerbacher we have created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It is smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol (5.6% ABV). Although winter ales predate history, they are believed to have their origin in the pagan celebrations of winter solstice. Later, when monasteries produced the local brew, winter ales were made each year to commemorate the birth of Christ. Back then, winter ales were brewed full-bodied as a source of nutrition for the upcoming winter months. Today, winter ales are typified by their seasonality, their rich, malty flavors and by their deep, dark coloration. Generally available November-March, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is the perfect libation for a winter meal, with good friends, or beside a warm fire fending off a cold winter night.

Bottle. Pours a clear crimson color with hints of chestnut brown. A small, foamy, beige tinted head quickly settles to a thin film and ring, leaving scant, wet spots of lacing behind. The nose shows notes of toasted toffee and crusty bread, with hints of cinnamon, clove, and a bit of cocoa roast. There’s a stale grainy overtone that mucks things up a good deal. Flavors also fail to impress, mainly showing dark toffee sweetness with some muddled winter spices and a little earthy hoppiness. Nothing really defines itself that well. The palate falls on the thin side, a little weak and undercarbonated for the style. Overall, this is an entirely forgettable brew.

Cask @ Classic City Cask Ale Fest. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruit, little spice. Taste is predominantly malty, with some more fruit and spice. Cask was well conditioned, with decent carbonation. Finish is smooth. Overall, an okay brew. Nothing great but not offensive either.

12 oz bottle served in a pint glass. Pour was cola with about a half inch of cream colored head, Nose was toffee, caramel, chocolate, malt, earth, and some spice. Taste was malt, toffee, and spice with a very dry finish. This is quite a tasty beer for what it is. Winter brews tend to be a bit heavier in all criteria, and this one seems on par, that is, till about 1 -2 seconds after the sip. This brew jumps off of the pallet in a fashion that a star trek fan could appreciate. I experienced all of the goodness, then blinked and thought I was drinking an ultra light ... perplexing. Because of this, I think I could easily over consume, and find myself in need of a ride home. I can’t give this beer top ratings in any category except pallet, but this beer is definitely worth seconds!

Bottle. Very dark pour with a thick light brown head. Aroma has an almost coffee smell. You can definitely taste the chocolate flavor, almost over powering. This is a perfect beer to sit around a fire, or on an outdoor night, but not a beer that would pair easily with most meals.

2008 bottle sampled in 2009. Pours rubied brown with a thick and creamy beige head. Nutty aroma. Medium body and light carbonation. Sweet, clean taste of brown sugar, nuts, raisins. Lightly spicy finish.

From a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours a medium brown with about a finger of head which dissipates quickly leaving little lacing. Aroma is of mild alcohol but that’s it. Taste is of malt, molasses and brown sugar. No hops are present but there is a slightly dry finish and odd aftertaste. Mouthfeel is good, slightly creamy and full but not syrupy at all. Overall, not a great winter ale but merely decent. It’s very sessionable for the style though.

12oz bottle. Medium brown color. Tan head. Aroma of fruit cake. Sweet and nutty. Nice malt character. A little off balance. Seems to be overly hopped for the malt profile. Some light traces of spice may be the hops.
