COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
At Weyerbacher we have created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It is smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol (5.6% ABV). Although winter ales predate history, they are believed to have their origin in the pagan celebrations of winter solstice. Later, when monasteries produced the local brew, winter ales were made each year to commemorate the birth of Christ. Back then, winter ales were brewed full-bodied as a source of nutrition for the upcoming winter months. Today, winter ales are typified by their seasonality, their rich, malty flavors and by their deep, dark coloration. Generally available November-March, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is the perfect libation for a winter meal, with good friends, or beside a warm fire fending off a cold winter night.

Nice deep pour. Light malts , chocolate , caramel. Some light spices. Pretty forgettable. Not a ton going on here ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle poured into glass. Winter warmers to me are a bit hard to swallow, too overly malty and some can be a tad on the boozy side. This one falls into that category somewhat. Nice cocoa flavor but the malts dominate.

Pours a dark reddish brown with a small dark tan head mostly dissipating. Nose is of malt and grains. Fairly creamy on the palate, the taste is of malt, chocolate, a touch of caramel and a hint of hops on the finish. Nice and flavorful. Good on a winter’s eve in front of a fireplace with nuts or pretzels.

12 oz bottle. Pours orange brown with a nice beige-orange head. Tastes like caramel, brown sugar, chocolate, malts. Almost no bitterness. Watery body. Not a memorable ale.

bottle on sale, aroma, malt toast brown bread color, medium amber hue, nice head taste, no spice just a strong malt beginning and finish, does impart some warmness overall, I have to try fresh, next year still good.

This one has a chocolate, roasted aroma. It’s dark, almost a brown ale. The flavor, however, is bittersweet and smokey, like caramel and cigars. Strange elements abound, sort of an old ale but not heavy enough. Medium body, both biting and smooth somehow. I enjoyed this, but have trouble explaining it. See for yourself.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a nice foamy off-white head. Nose is chocolate malt. Palate is smooth. Taste is slightly roasty, slightly malty, and slightly dark fruity - nothing dominates, but it blends together quite nicely. Enjoyable brew.

Sold as "Winter Warmer". Dark ruby color, small beige head. Caramel and perhaps hints of licorice too. Medium-bodied. Very caramelly with some alcohol. Somewhat English feeling. Decent.

12oz bottle from Sam’s, Durham. Bright, somewhat oily dark brown pour with hints of garnet and a moderate head. Warm and suffusing malts in the nose, promising an emphatic caramel bomb. Hints of fruit and a touch of dry hops playing around in there, perhaps even a hint of roasts. Okay, I guess, but nothing I’d swap out for Hibernation.
