At Weyerbacher we have created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It is smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol (5.6% ABV). Although winter ales predate history, they are believed to have their origin in the pagan celebrations of winter solstice. Later, when monasteries produced the local brew, winter ales were made each year to commemorate the birth of Christ. Back then, winter ales were brewed full-bodied as a source of nutrition for the upcoming winter months. Today, winter ales are typified by their seasonality, their rich, malty flavors and by their deep, dark coloration. Generally available November-March, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is the perfect libation for a winter meal, with good friends, or beside a warm fire fending off a cold winter night.

Pours a dark brown coffee color with a small cream colored head. Good lacing, head quickly fades though. Gentle smell of winter spices but not overpowering. Taste is unexceptional with a slight aftertaste. Mouthfeel is a bit on the grainy side. Not the most drinkable beer due to its volume but does have that "winter" feeling to it. Just not my particular taste.

Pours a dark-red/light brown with barely any head at all. Smells of toasted nuts, brown bread, toast. Taste is sweet, mildly bitter - dark bready malts, nuttiness, hint of licorice and dark chocolate. Very mild hops, a hint of woody and floral.

Good not great. A nice, malty brew, easy to drink and satisfying with roasted malt, slightly biscuity, and somewhat lingering finish.

12oz bottle purchased at Pinocchio’s. Pours a dark brown color with an off white head and a little lacing. Aroma dark fruit, raisin, plum, molasses. Medium on the palate with average carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, roasty, milk chocolate, brown sugar, with a sweet, raisin finish. Nice.

Pours deep amber/ruby with a medium tan head. Aroma has light roastiness and cocoa...a bit of dark fruit...but is very faint. Flavor has some roasty cocoa and dark fruit...underwhelming. mouthfeel is medium and the finish lingers with dark fruits. This is very underwhelming for a past silver medal winner.

Aromas of caramel, vanilla, roasted milk chocolate, and butterscotch. Appearance is very dark brown, almost black, with faint off-white head. Flavors of vanilla, cream soda, caramel, some hop bitterness, and some dry Belgian fruity esters. Medium-bodied, with a carbonated creamy texture, and a slightly sweet, slightly bitter, clean, lingering finish.

UPDATED: OCT 12, 2013 Aroma is a light barley wine/old ale, fruit and very heavy malts. The flavor is roasted/nutty malts, fruit, slight sweetness and a tart finish.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2013 2010 edition served Dec. 2010 in pint glass. This beer beer pours a cloudy dark amber color with a thick tan head that slowly fades to a nice ring. The aroma is good. This smells like a winter ale, with roasted chocolate malt overlaid with some spices and a bit of a fruity and floral yeast aroma. The taste is interesting and has some complexity. Although rather on the sweet side, it is dry on the finish with slight bitterness and some nuttiness. The mouthfeel is good, with a medium/full body, a creamy feel, and a nice level of carbonation. This is an interesting beer, with good flavor and creaminess, making for high drinkability. Lacks the body or high ABV found in more traditional winter ales.
