At Weyerbacher we have created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It is smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol (5.6% ABV). Although winter ales predate history, they are believed to have their origin in the pagan celebrations of winter solstice. Later, when monasteries produced the local brew, winter ales were made each year to commemorate the birth of Christ. Back then, winter ales were brewed full-bodied as a source of nutrition for the upcoming winter months. Today, winter ales are typified by their seasonality, their rich, malty flavors and by their deep, dark coloration. Generally available November-March, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is the perfect libation for a winter meal, with good friends, or beside a warm fire fending off a cold winter night.

Dunkelbraun-rote Farbe, neutral-malziger Geruch.
(22.2.2011) --> Noten: 12,8,13,7,12,8 - 9,20

Moderate nutty aroma, pours a dark ruby red with a full light tan head. Very malt forward beer, with a touch of sweetness, nuttiness, and roast. Lingering finish and moderate body. A nice change of pace from the spiced winter ales.

Spicy malty ale. Representative of holiday desert. Not bad but good in small quantities.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Wegmans Leesburg. It pours a medium to dark brown color with a thin, tan head. Earthy nose with a bit of cinnamon, bark, and malt. Nice brown malt flavor with a hint of spiciness. Nothing in the way of hop presence. Medium body with a good bit of chewy malt. Decent.

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2013 Draft at Good Dog. Clear dark brown pour with an off-white head. Malty. Pleasant dark roasted flavors. Hazelnut flavored coffee. Body feels watery. Bit too sweet. Not doing it gor me.

Malty and roasty. Overall very smooth but not the top in the category. The alcohol is subtle.

Pours dark brown with a white head. Rich, caramel, malty aroma. Medium to full bodied mouthfeel. Smooth and highly drinkable, a refreshing beer for cold nights. Dark malts dominate the flavor, with hints of chocolate and toffee. "Winter Ale" is not something that comes to mind while drinking it, but it’s still a good beer

Roasty malt character, a minor coffee/toffee note. Very watery. Not much to it. Average winter beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Date Rated: Feb. 2, 2013... Glassware: Corsendonk tulip... Occasion: Hunger games watching....thirsty work... Appearance: dark ruby-purple body with a decent off-white head; laces sporadically... Aroma: fruity, peaty with doughy malts and some smoky hints... Palate: fizzy and warm--a Weyerbacher hallmark--and a bit dry; full-bodied and lasting in its finish... Taste: grapey, wine-tinged porter with a cola flavor, black and caloric; neither here nor there in terms of memorable... Overall: the W brand has settled slightly with its alcohol overload mission and seems to have attempted a more restrained approach here; the winter may need more distinguishable notes, but its serviceable at house parties and before the fireplace...
