COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
At Weyerbacher we have created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It is smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol (5.6% ABV). Although winter ales predate history, they are believed to have their origin in the pagan celebrations of winter solstice. Later, when monasteries produced the local brew, winter ales were made each year to commemorate the birth of Christ. Back then, winter ales were brewed full-bodied as a source of nutrition for the upcoming winter months. Today, winter ales are typified by their seasonality, their rich, malty flavors and by their deep, dark coloration. Generally available November-March, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is the perfect libation for a winter meal, with good friends, or beside a warm fire fending off a cold winter night.

Aroma - Almost no aroma at all. Appearance - Dark clear brown, light head Taste - Good taste, just not enough of it. Palate - a very light beer, despite the dark color; slightly dry finish Overall - Too light a beer for me. It isnít offensive, but doesnít do anything for me...

BBD 1/22/15. Pours a dark amber with a rich dark ruby hue. Excellent head, normal retention and lacing. Weak, but nice, nose of caramel, a touch of molasses and a hint of dark fruit (fig). Almost light medium body with a touch of creaminess. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the finish. The flavor profile is disappointing. There is some light caramel and a roasted malt nuttiness underneath a somewhat metallic off flavor. The finish is a lingering continuation of the off flavor. Iím glad this 6 pack was a gift, because the rest is going in the garbage.

Drank from bottle. Warmingly spicy, very malty, good viscosity. Not a lot to it, but as a lower-ABV winter ale it might be a nice beer for a ski trip.

Pours medium brown with a half finger off white head with decent lacing. Aroma is of toasted bready malts, coco, cherries, herbal hops, brown sugar, and nutty malts. Taste is chocolaty with cherries, brown sugar, bready malts, and sweet malts also present. has a medium body with a semi watery mouthfeel and a mostly sweet, slightly dry, medium finish. Overall, a decent brown ale that is a little thin for a winter seasonal.

Bottle into pint glass, clear deep dark ruby brown color with tan head. Aroma of toast, caramel, light coffee, some nuttiness and cocoa. Taste adds notes of toffee, milk chocolate and light herbal/earthy hop bitterness. Medium body, low carbonation, creamy, soft, rich with some earthy roast finish. Very nice malty rich winter ale.

Pours a dark brown with a red hue. Roasty taste with a light body more carbonation than I expected. Nice change of pace for a winter ale, not a "big boy" beer by any means, but it's a good beer on a cold night.
