At Weyerbacher we have created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It is smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol (5.6% ABV). Although winter ales predate history, they are believed to have their origin in the pagan celebrations of winter solstice. Later, when monasteries produced the local brew, winter ales were made each year to commemorate the birth of Christ. Back then, winter ales were brewed full-bodied as a source of nutrition for the upcoming winter months. Today, winter ales are typified by their seasonality, their rich, malty flavors and by their deep, dark coloration. Generally available November-March, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is the perfect libation for a winter meal, with good friends, or beside a warm fire fending off a cold winter night.

bottle. Brown with small head. Medium malty body with some dark bready notes. Reminds me of a loaf of pumpernickel. Light spice.

09/30/14 and 01/30/15, assuming born on and best by dates. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a mostly dark brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about thirty seconds leaving some light stringy lacing sliding here and there. The smell had some light sweet prune, light roasty nuts and sweet brown sugar with a light breadiness. The taste was mainly sweet malty taking the roasty nutty part to lighten a bit. A light sweet prune aftertaste is there that lead to a semi - sweet / dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was pretty mild and light. I get it, itís okay even if past itís due date a bit. Overall, though I had it past itís prime, Iíd say itís still worthy of having again. And would definitely welcome fresher next time.

Pours a dark brown. Almost no aromas. Slightly creamy mouthfeel. Malts, oak, hint of vanilla. Sweet aftertaste. A bit boring.

Draught @ Albion. Brown with a reddish tint, small off-white foamy head that dissipated fast, leaving a ring behind. Slight caramel aroma, high carbonation, caramel-mocha taste, rather abrupt finish. Quite an enjoyable ale!

BBD 1/22/15. Pours a dark amber with a rich dark ruby hue. Excellent head, normal retention and lacing. Weak, but nice, nose of caramel, a touch of molasses and a hint of dark fruit (fig). Almost light medium body with a touch of creaminess. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the finish. The flavor profile is disappointing. There is some light caramel and a roasted malt nuttiness underneath a somewhat metallic off flavor. The finish is a lingering continuation of the off flavor. Iím glad this 6 pack was a gift, because the rest is going in the garbage.

Drank from bottle. Warmingly spicy, very malty, good viscosity. Not a lot to it, but as a lower-ABV winter ale it might be a nice beer for a ski trip.

Pours medium brown with a half finger off white head with decent lacing. Aroma is of toasted bready malts, coco, cherries, herbal hops, brown sugar, and nutty malts. Taste is chocolaty with cherries, brown sugar, bready malts, and sweet malts also present. has a medium body with a semi watery mouthfeel and a mostly sweet, slightly dry, medium finish. Overall, a decent brown ale that is a little thin for a winter seasonal.

Bottle into pint glass, clear deep dark ruby brown color with tan head. Aroma of toast, caramel, light coffee, some nuttiness and cocoa. Taste adds notes of toffee, milk chocolate and light herbal/earthy hop bitterness. Medium body, low carbonation, creamy, soft, rich with some earthy roast finish. Very nice malty rich winter ale.
